Yesterday, we collaborated with other coastal land managers to undertake a conflict resolution course. We work in an interesting space where we do not have enforcement authority; the best we can do is request that stakeholders comply with Foreshore/Camping regulations and Dog regulations. Combined with the fact that most employees in this field have Environmental Science backgrounds and little formal customer service training, it means there is a knowledge gap in how to handle tense situations. It is important that we address the major WHS risk of public threat from adverse encounters with stakeholders, and the engagement skills and de-escalation techniques we learnt today will be a significant step forward in mitigating these risks. Ultimately, this will lead to a safer workplace for employees and safer public areas for the wider community. As a smaller organisation, it is always great catching up with the crew from Balnarring, Dromana, and Capel Sound Foreshore CoMs. We face identical issues and these intentional opportunities for mutual learning mean we aren't duplicating our efforts (as often). Spring has sprung and the clock has moved forward. Pools across the country are getting ready open in a month's time + or -. What's an important item that gets lost in the filling of pools, replacement of pump seals, adjusting water chemistry, and the all important Lifeguard hiring and Pre-Service training process? A simple review of the facility safety plan. This should happen annually at least (April is perfect for seasonal pools), or whenever there is a change to operations or staffing structure. Dust if off and take a look folks. A safety plan is a key piece of your operational practice. Have staff positions changed hands or roles? Does EVERYONE involved with the facility know their role? Hint: aquatic safety isn't just for lifeguards. What role does the General Manager / Executive Director play? What role does the HOA point of contact play? What role does the facilities contract pool maintenance team play? Have questions? See the CDC Model Aquatic Health Code Section 6.3.3 (pages 168-72) for the essentials. 2024 marks my 35th year in the environmental emergency response arena including a decade in the Emergency Services Branch of the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality. Ten years as a regulator and twenty-five as a contractor has allowed me to develop valuable insight into the emergency response business. I have been blessed to have enjoyed a very rewarding and successful career at USES and E3. Both companies became power-house response contractors and E3 is still surging and riding a safe and successful wave. I have been asked numerous times what it is that I most attribute the success of these companies on. Of course developing and nurturing a strong culture of safety is a critical component. The single most important factor. The next most important component is one that some folks seem surprised to hear. That component is competition from other response contractors. Competition is what has driven me to dig-in and focus on developing a stronger, better and safer company. There are many really good response contractors in the environmental field that do great work and are tough competitors. But I can confidently say that I have strong relationships with most all of my competitors. For the most part I consider the principals of my major competitors to be friends of mine. We get along well and pass work back and forth. We compete head-to-head for the same customers but we do so respectfully and professionally. These competitive, but friendly relationships is what drives me to work harder to make E3 the best response contractor on the planet. There is nothing wrong with having tough competition. It forces all of us to strive to be better than the next guy. I attribute much of my success to my competitors. Our industry is relatively small and I’m proud to say that I’m friends with most all my competitors. We hire them on bigger spills and they reciprocate with us. In my six years as Managing Partner at E3 it’s safe to say we have performed well over $100M in revenue where we were hired by our competitors. There is no question that E3 is a power-house response contractor with a solid reputation. And I thank our strong competitors for helping us achieve this honor. Competition is not a bad thing. To the contrary it’s actually valuable and necessary to becoming one of the best in the industry. It pushes us to be safer, more efficient and stronger. And what I really value is that despite a strong competitive atmosphere in our industry, our industry leaders all gather up periodically over a beer or dinner to enjoy professional friendships.
