Opal Tometi, a co-founder of the Black Lives Matter movement, inspires us to be courageous in our pursuit of fairness, justice, and inclusivity in society. Tometi's advocacy for these principles teaches us the importance of standing up for what is right, even in the face of adversity. We can learn from Tometi the necessity of having strong convictions and the willingness to act on them. This means taking a stance against injustice, discrimination, and inequality, and actively working towards creating a more equitable and inclusive society. Tometi's message encourages us to be bold in our beliefs and to advocate for change, whether it's through peaceful protest, community organizing, or promoting awareness and education. To apply Tometi's principles to our day-to-day lives, we can start by examining the ways in which we can promote fairness, justice, and inclusivity within our own spheres of influence. This could involve confronting our own biases, speaking out against discriminatory practices, and actively supporting marginalized communities. Additionally, we can engage in conversations with others to raise awareness and promote understanding of social issues. Tometi's challenge to us also means being willing to step outside of our comfort zones and take action. This can involve participating in efforts to address systemic injustices, supporting policy changes, and actively working to dismantle oppressive systems. It also means being open to learning from others and recognizing the need for ongoing growth and education in the pursuit of creating a fair and just society. By embodying Tometi's principles, we can contribute to building a world that is more equitable, just, and inclusive for all. #justice #fairness #inclusivity #courage #leadership #blackleaders #womeninleadership #founder #womeninbusiness

Today and everyday we champion justice and celebrate joy. Juneteenth is also a reminder to continue resisting oppression in all its forms. Because even after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1863—the work of abolition was far from over. We still have work to do to fight inequity. Code builds our tech, and tech builds our society. But less than 2% of STEM roles are held by Black women. That means an entire demographic is missing from the rooms where our future is shaped. Tech needs more Black voices. Black Girls Code ensures that Black girls believe they belong in tech, as we educate and launch them with the skills, opportunities, and resources to lead. Celebrate #Juneteenth by joining our mission. Together, we can make real change. www.wearebgc.org. #WeBelongInTheRoom #BlackGirlsCode #WeAreBGC

Truthfully, I know how difficult it can be to turn information into knowledge and create space to embody new ways of thinking, being, and doing. And for most of us, learning a new language is easy. It is wrestling with new ideas that often present a challenge. For those of us seeking to thrive in a more inclusive society, we realize that racial equity must be a fixture in our everyday lives. Yet, right now, in the continental U.S. (and other parts of the world), we see a significant response to the recent attempts to right historical wrongs. Dr. King spoke about this stagnancy that shows up during times of social progress: “I would like to honestly say to you that the white backlash is merely a new name for an old phenomenon. It may well be that shouts of black power and riots in Watts and the Harlems and the other areas are the consequences of the white backlash, rather than the cause of them. What it is necessary to see is that there has never been a single, solid, monistic, determined commitment on the part of the vast majority of white Americans on the whole question of civil rights and on the whole question of racial equality.” (The Other America, 1967) For folks ready to personally put into play some of the amazing things they learned during #BHM, I have created a great learning opportunity starting next month (right after #blackhistorymonth). The Online Workshop: Understanding and Addressing Anti-Blackness has been designed to help folks embody new ways to eliminate anti-Blackness and other types of racialized violence from their lives.
