I'm recapping my experience at #NSBE50! This week, I'm focusing on an engaging workshop led by Korie Grayson, PhD, titled "Self-Promotion and Branding as a STEM Professional." Dr. Grayson, demonstrating both knowledge and openness, shared her med school journey and offered valuable insights into her current approach to professional branding. Her definition of personal branding particularly resonated with me: "creating your own superhero persona - a unique blend of skills, quirks, and values that make you the one-of-a-kind powerhouse you are." Key points from her presentation also included the importance of branding through social media (such as LinkedIn) and the impact of a good, cohesive profile (and website) on personal branding. Dr. Grayson went further, presenting real-world examples that showcased diverse profiles, and not just mere templates. Finally, I'd like to share the most impactful lines from the affirmation Dr. Grayson led us in, believing it can inspire others: “I am not just a professional, but a beacon of excellence, paving the way for future generations… I am a force for change, breaking barriers and reshaping narratives in the engineering world. My story matters, my skills matter, and I am proud to share them with the world.” - Dr. Grayson #ProfessionalDevelopment #PersonalBranding #SelfPromotion

I help mission-driven organizations build teams that can change the world and thrive while doing it | Google & McKinsey Alum | Navy Veteran
I'll be leading a session at the The Learning Ideas Conference this June, titled "Who Are the Premier Workforce Development Providers of the Future: Community Colleges or Big Tech?" (The topic grew out of some research I did in the Education Entrepreneurship program at University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education.) I'm hoping to put together an engaging panel discussion - let me know if you or anyone in your network may be interested in contributing. Otherwise, I hope to see you there! Full abstract: Technological innovation has exerted pressure on the #highereducation space for some time, and the effects of this pressure became more pronounced and visible during the coronavirus pandemic. Degrees once conferred through traditional, costly residential models have now been conferred through virtual programs (often at the same cost), and students have predictably begun to reconsider the cost of these degrees relative to their value. This conflict is particularly stark for #vocational certifications traditionally conferred in the form of associate degrees by #communitycolleges across the United States. The value proposition of these degrees is largely often explicitly transactional - that is, they are worth pursuing only insofar as they help the student find rewarding employment - and technological and economic advancements have given rise to privately sponsored alternatives that promise valuable skills and more efficient job placement at a fraction of the cost of traditional community college models. How or whether these traditional institutions survive in the face of new competition - and the effects that both types of organizations will have on the workforce - depend on how they adapt, and the underlying organizational and cultural drivers of their behavior. This presentation will chart out potential futures of #workforcedevelopment in the US through a comparative study of US Community Colleges and privately sponsored options like Grow with Google. It will also seek to contribute to an ongoing discussion on the relevance and role of institutions of higher learning, exemplified by articles such as "The Ever-More-Corporate University: Almost nothing on campus is off limits to private equity" (The Chronicle of Higher Education, November 6, 2023), "No, #Disruption Isn't Coming for Higher Ed: Our system is more resilient than would-be disrupters think" (The Chronicle of Higher Education, October 19, 2023, and "Stop Corporatizing My Students" (The New York Times, November 15 2023.)

How Hard Can It Be? Have you ever wondered, "How hard can it be?" when addressing day-to-day issues? This is a question I often encounter as I spend my time engaging with STEM students and business leaders alike. The answer, however, is not as straightforward as one might think. It's a journey of imagination and innovation, where the limits of technology are only bound by our creativity. On my article web page, https://lnkd.in/e6fi6SRG, I delve into technology's extraordinary potential. I frequently speak with STEM students, emphasising that technology will do whatever they want it to do. The secret lies in their imaginations. It's the innovative spirit we must harness to drive the future forward. This philosophy isn't just for the younger generation. Businesses too often find themselves ensnared by immediate problems, leading to a mismatch or overlap of technologies. I urge them to step back and envision the future. What does good look like? More importantly, what does great look like? Businesses can see beyond the immediate obstacles by taking a step back and thinking strategically. The key to leveraging technology effectively lies in forward-thinking and aligning technological solutions with long-term goals. It's about creating a roadmap that addresses current challenges and paves the way for groundbreaking innovations and sustainable growth. I invite you to explore my articles, in which I discuss these ideas in greater depth. Together, let us embark on a journey of turning imagination into reality and transforming good into great.
