Celebrating Innovation and Ambition in STEM! The video below features Shauna Esmonde, winner of the Best Project Award and the Boston Scientific Medical Devices Award at the regional SciFest@College 2024 in TU Dublin Blanchardstown last May. At just 14 years old and in second year at Loreto St Michael’s, Navan, Co. Meath, Shauna embarked on a groundbreaking project exploring improved biocompatibility in patch designs for ASD closures, a surgical solution for a congenital heart defect that affects blood flow in the heart. Through her research, Shauna identified opportunities to address the unique anatomical challenges associated with TGA, showcasing not only her technical skills but also her determination to make a difference in the medical field. Shauna's incredible achievement at such a young age is a testament to the bright future she has ahead. This month marks the one-year anniversary of the Bone-Anchored Prosthetics Society! In just one year, this pioneering society has become a thriving community dedicated to advancing the clinical care of individuals with bone-anchored prostheses through research, education, and collaboration. Some accomplishments: ✅ Expanded from 20 to 50 members ✅ Hosted the first-ever Academy Unconference, followed by the creation of a Journal of Proceedings and webinar ✅ Published article in the O&P Edge ✅ Shared insights on the Academy’s Clinical Care Insiders Podcast The Bone-Anchored Prosthetics Society is one of ten Academy Scientific Societies, each committed to advancing a specific area within O&P.
