Such a busy day yesterday at Healthcare Estates. Good news for everyone involved in delivering high quality patient environments. A superb day for addressing the critical issues affecting the healthcare engineering and estates management. Thanks to everyone who has contributed to the extensive content made available over this 2-day period. IHEEM (The Institute of Healthcare Engineering and Estate Management) NHS England

As the demand for modernized and expanded infrastructure surges, one sector stands out with unprecedented momentum: medical facilities. Healthcare buildings are critical components of the nation’s infrastructure and from what can be seen in planning documents, it appears that almost every region in the U.S. is evaluating some type of healthcare-related upgrade.

The current state of our CWM and other Hospital infrastructure highlights an urgent need for modernization. As the facilities age, maintenance becomes increasingly costly and inefficient. Instead of continuously investing in an outdated structure, we must focus on building a new, state-of-the-art hospital that meets the demands of contemporary healthcare. From a construction and engineering standpoint, a phased approach to constructing a new hospital is the most cost-effective and efficient solution. This method allows us to integrate advanced medical technologies and modern design principles from the start, ensuring a future-proof facility. Our proposal involves a strategic, phased construction plan, where each phase targets a specific section of the hospital. This approach ensures that the project is manageable and financially sustainable while minimizing disruptions to ongoing healthcare services. This initiative goes beyond political affiliations—it’s a call for collaborative efforts to improve our healthcare system. The current Fijian government has a unique opportunity to take a visionary step by initiating this construction project. Existing facilities can be repurposed for administrative or research purposes, ensuring that no part of our infrastructure is wasted. Building a new CWM Hospital will benefit our healthcare system and demonstrate our commitment to the well-being of our citizens. It will stand as a testament to our ability to innovate and adapt, providing future generations with access to world-class medical care. It's time for bold action, not political games. #Healthcare #Innovation #Engineering #Fiji

Health facilities are constantly evolving and the rate of change is increasingly rapid. My thoughts on how planning and procurement must respond.
The operation was a complete success, but the patient died. This familiar fable is used to illustrate an imperfect system having primacy over measures planned to achieve the best outcome. Yet we do this all the time in health building procurement, delivering a beautifully designed product which misses the target of a rapidly evolving set of needs. In the NHS, we have set ourselves a series of standards, procedures and expectations which are geared to fail. In his latest column, Christopher Shaw examines the issues created by rigid specifications required too early in a project, asking the question: 💡 Are we over-designing? ➡️ Read full article: www.fortismagazine.co.uk Christopher has over 30 years of experience in healthcare design and was closely involved in the design of more than 70 major hospitals worldwide. He was Chair of Architects for Health until 2022. Now retired, Christopher works as a consultant to the industry. #NHS #fortis #fortismagzine #freemagazine
