“Applying for 5 jobs a week” is not a job search strategy. Nor is “updating your CV”. Or “attending a job fair”. If you want your client to find work quickly, you must help them develop a winning job search strategy. Here’s an example of one: ☑️ Step 1: Conduct internet-based research into your target employer/s. Discover the exact qualities they’re looking for in their new hires. Bonus step: Learn more by connecting with company employees on LinkedIn. ☑️ Step 2: Tailor CV and LinkedIn profile to match the qualities desired by the employer. Include examples of key competencies, using the same key words and phrases used by the employer on their company website and job description. ☑️ Step 3: Find out how often open vacancies are advertised and what the recruitment process involves. If it's not clear from the company website, contact the HR team. ☑️ Step 4: Prepare a draft application for the next upcoming vacancy. When the vacancy is open, contact the hiring manager to learn more about the role and find out how to gain a competitive advantage to other candidates (i.e. what's the key thing they’re looking for?). Submit your application early. ☑️ Step 5: If there are no open vacancies, or application is unsuccessful, develop a ‘hidden market’ strategy. E.g. Undertake a work placement in the company, connect with company employees on LinkedIn, apply for an alternative (entry-level / adjacent) role within the company (e.g. different department). This approach has a significant impact on both your personal and professional life. Be your biggest cheerleader using positive self-talk (encouraging yourself to transform out of your comfort zone and to think beyond the box). In other words, think differently, unconventionally, or from a new perspective where people that know you won’t be just surprised but very happy for you. PREPARE ▶️ Engage in activities/events/projects that is in your desirable career path that might look like volunteering or serving on committees. Research how to gain the experience, education or both. Be innovative and build your network by using virtual/online platforms such as LinkedIn, YouTube, TikTok, etc. With that unconventional thinking, utilize diverse resources that’s not restricted by race, age, location, etc. Ascribe to various career alerts to stay in the know. Establish spontaneous short term action oriented goals or long term benchmark goals. PROCESS ▶️ Reassess your resume and cover letter for any necessary adjustments assuring that your skills are captured per job descriptions. Have sound references. Start putting your fillers out.
