Explaining a career gap can feel daunting, but with the right approach, you can turn it into a positive aspect of your professional journey. Here are some tips to help you explain a career gap effectively: 1. Be Honest and Concise: Clearly explain the reason for your gap without going into too much detail. For example, “I took time off to care for a family member” or “I pursued further education.” 2. Highlight Productive Activities: Emphasize any productive activities you engaged in during the gap, such as volunteering, freelancing, taking courses, or developing new skills. This shows that you remained proactive and committed to personal growth. 3. Reassure Readiness: Make it clear that the situation causing the gap has been resolved and that you are fully ready to commit to a new role. For instance. 4. Focus on the Future: Shift the conversation towards your enthusiasm for the position you’re applying for and how your experiences, including the gap, have prepared you for this role. For example, “During my time off, I gained valuable insights that I believe will contribute to my success in this position.” 5. Practice Your Explanation: Prepare and practice your explanation so that you can deliver it confidently and smoothly during interviews. Here’s a sample explanation you might use: “I took a year off to care for a family member who was ill. During this time, I also completed several online courses to enhance my skills in [relevant field]. Now that my family member is well and I have gained additional knowledge, I am fully prepared and excited to return to work and contribute to your team.”

Here are some strategies to accomplish this: ✅Highlight positive experiences: Emphasize what you learned during the break and how it contributed to your personal growth. Returning back to paid work after a career break is never easy and it can be especially hard if you have taken a career pause to look after your family. Often the hardest part is knowing where to start and to understand your value and what you have to offer. 📣A great first step is to take stock of the skills you applied whilst raising your family. Project management, problem solving skills are just a few of the many valuable skills you probably honed. Write them down with some examples of when you applied those skills. They are great talking points that will be of use in the future 📣Create a resume that highlights these skills. A resume is still the way forward irrespective of the method of working you have in mind be it #freelance, full /part time. If you have done any volunteering, it can be added as a position you had. Make sure to include the work you have done and the organisation(s) you have worked with 📣Having a network that is supportive is a great way to improve your chances when you are looking to go back to paid work. Make connections both in person and online. (re)Connect with people you know and also people you would like to know 📣remember you are not alone !! Info@workfreeely.com www.workfreeely.com
