Freight is often an afterthought in #TransportPlanning, but is critical for our economy, increasingly important for our on-demand lifestyles, and essential to understand and manage for #TransportDecarbonisation. So great to see this Arup report focusing on the future drivers of change in global goods movement and exploring how the sector needs to anticipate and plan for these to ensure resilience of the global economy and a more sustainable planet. There is even a long and short version to download depending on how much time you have - we aim to please 😀. https://lnkd.in/ebWCubXt Well done to my colleagues Ritu Garg, Lewis Wingfield and Matt McFarlane and the rest of the team.

More on Arup's 'highly commended' #BusServiceImprovementPlan programme work with Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom below 👇
We are thrilled to announce that our work delivering the DfT's Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP) programme was highly commended in the 'Change and Transformation in the Public Sector' category at the MCA Awards 2024. Buses are at the heart of the UK's public transport network, making more than twice as many journeys as railways. Our work on the programme aimed to transform bus services across England, improving social equity, public health, and driving decarbonisation. Collaborating with the Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom, we assessed 76 BSIPs, unlocking £1.08B in funding for 32 Local Transport Authorities. We also created a ‘Bus Centre of Excellence’ to address skills shortages and foster innovation. Together, we’ve set the stage for simpler fares, new buses, and better routes for communities across the country. Congratulations to all the finalists and winners at the MCA Awards 2024! See below the last in the series of my Arup colleague Kieran Arter's #AZofTransportEconomics. If you haven't been following it then you need to go back to A and enjoy the whole alphabet!
A-Z of Transport Economics: Z for Zero That's Net Zero that I'm referring to here... It feels fitting that the final post in this series should relate to arguably the most important issue of our time in the transport world - the path to decarbonisation. Where does transport economics come into this? From a professional perspective, one of the main contributions that transport economists can offer is to help make a robust case for public transport and active travel, using the sort of techniques and approaches that I have described throughout this series. As part of this, we put a value on carbon emissions, with TAG setting out values that can be applied. These change over time and have a range around them, but as an example carbon is valued at £260 per tonne of CO2e as a central value in 2024 (valued in today's prices). So it's important to understand how an intervention will affect emissions (both directly, and through mode shift impacts) to capture this properly. In my experience, the total value of emissions often ends up being fairly low compared to other impacts that are included in appraisal such as time savings. But this might change, with an increasing emphasis on making sure that whole life emissions are captured. This is in accordance with the principles of the PAS 2080 framework, with Arup having co-authored the 2023 revision to it. https://lnkd.in/eNYp8kXB Economics is only one piece of the jigsaw; as with so many things, we need good collaboration across a range of disciplines to achieve the outcomes that we want and shape a better world. Well, there we have it- we have reached the end of this 26-part series! Thank you so much to everyone who has read, reacted to and engaged with it- it has been a pleasure to do it. I’m not exactly sure where I’ll go with it from here, but I look forward to keep using LinkedIn for sharing and receiving knowledge either way! #WeAreArup #TransportEconomicsAtoZ #transporteconomics #TPSE #carbon #emissions #netzero
