📣 Gentle nudge for Learning and Talent Development leaders who want to make learning a seamless and integral part of your organisation's culture... While investing in initiatives like 'Learning Days' or 'World-Class Content Libraries' sound like great ideas have you considered the impact of high-pressure, output-driven work environments on your people's ability to prioritize learning? Instead of pushing more things at your people, using your position, influence and resources to create the conditions for learning to happen organically will have the double-effect of increasing the capacity for people to learn while also helping nurture a more positive employee experience. Bonus nudge: Most learning doesn't happen in a Learning Platform or Classroom/Teams session, but in-the-moment when your people are presented with a problem to solve. Diverting resources to creating conditions for people to access solutions to their problems would help people learn as they go, even if they don't recognise this as 'learning' in the same way you do. #learninganddevelopment #talentdevelopment #employeeexperience #learningculture

Experienced Learning and Development Professional, CPTM ◆ I transform “performance management” cultures into cultures of performance excellence via adaptive leadership framework. Ask me for info! ◆ I adopt greyhounds!
I'm often asked "how do we teach people critical thinking skills". Many L&D leaders build engaging and interactive role playing scenarios attempting to build critical thinking skills. And people love it! ❤️ I love it! ❤️ Unfortunately, once out in the "real" world, we either freeze up, the scenario isn't what we practiced, or too much time has passed and that experience wasn't deposited into long-term memory. This amazing article breaks down the concept of metacognition, thinking about thinking. "Metacognition leads to smarter, more adaptable employees who can learn from past experiences and apply their insights to complex problems." My own take on metacognition is that you must first understand not just how you think, but why you think the way you do, and be open to exploring different thinking strategies. Check out the article by Joseph Atkinson! #Learning #Metacognition #CriticalThinking #TrainingIndustry

“Metacognitive practices can help learners recognize the limits of their knowledge, which is the first step in addressing misunderstandings and acquiring new skills.” This struck a chord with me as I read this article. Although the article focuses on how metacognitive practices can be used in a learning environment, imagine how this can also be used in the DEI&B space!

This reflection was about a really common challenge of all our clients who are designing learning journeys focused on organisational and culture change. How do we balance the long-time nature of transformative change with short-time challenges of our employees who perceive they lack time and will for long-time learning and have a real need to be taking action - and be seen to be taking action - now? How do we design deep change from one organisational form and purpose to another when stakeholders need action now? Whilst prioritisation and balance of long-time / short-term is different for every organisation, what I can share are the principles we think about when designing our own learning journeys. 1. Look at the underlying real issue: for us the issue of time is less about time and more about recognising that increasing complexity is a driver behind our perception of lack of time. So our strategic mission in all our learning journeys is to help people dance with complexity. 2. Have a vision and a core logic: really look at what you are travelling from/to. We are travelling from 'new to regenerative design' to 'capable regenerative practitioner'. Our core logic is living systems principles. Both these things can be applied to long-time or short-term learning. 3. Know your theory of change. There are many different theories of change but you have to know what it is 'you' believe. One of our core theories of change is that you have to reflect, experience and embody something your self, to be able to embody it in right relationship with others, in order to design projects, shift places and systems. So it's a nested interconnected process that starts with Self. 4. It needs a cultural infrastructure. By which I mean you need to first have people in the organisation who are a little more experienced in regenerative resourcing (or work with an organisation like RRCIC) so that there is a safety net to hold people through the challenges of change. A self-organising cascade is often useful. 5. Every after that is content - that is produced to take into account the many different ways of learning that complex humans have. Content also has to be dropped in to build capability so you have to know what kind of capability opens the door for another one to be taken up. So if you want a more courageous culture what are the underlying qualities and conditions? Or if you want a more experimental and evolutionary culture, what do you need to work on before you get there? That's probably another ramble.... That's how we try to design our programmes. Whether it's the deep dive of our signature learning journey Power of Place or our new shorter programmes. #PlacesforLife #regenerativeleadership #OD Our long-time learning journey Power of Place: Introduction to Regenerative Places for Life is now open for registration. Often, what we learn independently is more memorable and engaging than what we’re simply told in a classroom. That’s why the trend for self-directed learning has gathered so much momentum. Self-directed learning is when individuals take control of their own learning process, setting goals, finding resources, and evaluating their progress. When People teams champion this autonomous approach to learning, it can help employees feel more engaged with their work and more confident, empowering them to be more innovative and to drive results at their organization. Why should you consider implementing self-directed learning into your strategy? Autonomy and engagement: It allows employees to take ownership, leading to higher engagement and job satisfaction. Research shows that autonomy is linked to stronger performance and job commitment. Relevance: Individuals and managers address skills gaps effectively, ensuring that learning resources are tailored to meet individual and departmental needs. Performance and job satisfaction: Research by Josh Bersin shows that employees who devote a lot of time to learning are more likely to report greater confidence (21%), productivity (39%), and a willingness to take on more responsibilities (23%).
