And spoke with many still working but pondering how to continue contributing meaningfully and productively. And I know many retirees who continue to work after “retiring” from their regular jobs. And I agree wholeheartedly, that the best time of their lives is not in the past but right now or still in front of them. We do need to overcome ageist stereotypes and start thinking of older and retired workers as a large, versatile, and valuable labor pool—one that’s significantly underutilized. That's one big reason I've made the pivot now to coaching and facilitation. This is meaningful work I can keep doing for another decade and likely much longer. Are you facing a new chapter in life? At 64, people said I should cash out and retire Instead, I bought back my company. Many were surprised. "Judee, why not sell and enjoy your golden years?" they'd ask. But for me, this wasn't just a company - it was my life's work and passion. I founded Diversified Search Group in the 1970s, when women-owned businesses were a rarity in the executive search industry. Over the years, we grew to become one of the top search firms in the country. To fuel our growth, I had sold ownership stakes along the way. But as I approached my mid-60s, I felt an unwavering pull to regain full control of the company's future. I saw tremendous potential for further growth and innovation. More importantly, I wasn't ready to step away from the work I loved. Buying back the company was a statement - that age is just a number, that passion doesn't have an expiration date, and that sometimes doubling down is more rewarding than cashing out. For me, this wasn't about working forever. It was about having the freedom to shape the next chapter on my own terms. It was about continuing to make an impact in an industry and with a team I cherished. So at 64, when many of my peers were slowing down, I chose to speed up. Because true fulfilment isn't about following someone else's retirement playbook - it's about writing your own story, at any age. What unconventional decision have you made in your career?
