5 ways Security Professionals can Successfully Build Strong Relationships 1. Learn and Understand Their Domain Familiarize yourself with their environment, technology, and processes. Avoid an ethnocentric approach and speak their language. Acknowledge that different disciplines have unique perspectives and requirements. 2. Develop Credibility and Integrity Build trust by demonstrating genuine expertise and understanding. Want to talk to developers on secure coding? Be comfortable with coding yourself. Don’t know coding? Go learn it! This automatically also becomes a learning path for you. 3. Foster Trust and Confidence Ensure that other teams feel confident in your intent of security. They need to believe you are acting in their best interests. Show them you are willing to meet them in the middle and don't push them just to make your security metrics look good. Building a solid reputation for reliability and commitment is crucial. 4. Be Empathetic and Seek Win-Win Solutions Recognize that product and business teams have their own challenges and workload. Approach security controls in a way that integrates smoothly with their existing responsibilities, aiming for mutually beneficial outcomes. Don't just throw the rule-book at them and expect them to comply. 5. Collaborate, Don’t Impose Use influence rather than authority to guide discussions and decisions. I have seen people throwing their titles in the air. Don't! Focus on making your suggestions relevant and compelling. Security should be built around business and not the way around. In the diet of software development, you need to campaign for security as "low-fat yoghurt". That people can easily include in their diet, with small portions, wouldn’t have any health concerns and contributes to their well-being in the long term. Simply. Sustainable.
