Are we doing this hiring thing right? Is age really just a number... I attended a great luncheon today put on by North Coast Business Initiative about leading Generational workforces. The timing was great, merely for the fact I had more than one conversation this week based on age. One candidate asked if the company would consider someone over 60. 🤯 He said that he had more than one interview that got to the in-person or Zoom and was discounted due to age. Now, it could have felt that way, but one of the let-down letters said they 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞. When he asked me this, I was honestly floored. In so many industries, hiring is a struggle, so are we adding massive hurdles? Why would a company discount a candidate for any reason, especially age? I know folks who are 70 and can run circles around someone 40. Someone who is 60, can and will work 50 hours a week and not blink an eye. Coming from the standpoint of someone who handles what I call "blind recruiting" (I only care about the profile, not the person) it seems we should be rethinking our must-haves. And rethink who can and will do the job. #changethenarrative #ageism #rework

Number one thing our team looks at when hiring? The candidate's height. Because consider this. Most companies host between 3-5 social events per year. That's 3-5 opportunities for someone to say "Omg, let's get a group pic!" And if you're hiring people taller than you? That's 3-5 opportunities for the tall people to do bunny ears behind your head and make you look like an idiot. Employees don't respect a boss who got bunny ears did to them.
