Dr. Praveer Sinha, CEO & MD of Tata Power, delivered the opening address at Indian Electrical & Electronics Manufacturers' Association (IEEMA)'s Buildelec, Intelect and Distribuelec 2024. While addressing the august gathering, he said that the Indian power sector is well poised to meet the rising power demand and ensure power for all. He commended the successful management of the soaring peak demand, from 180 GW to 240 GW, in a short span of three years without any disruptions. This year, he projected a peak of 260-270 GW. While emphasizing the importance of R&D and innovation, he added that smart technologies must be integrated into grids to make them more efficient and resilient. He also recommended that the energy storage systems should explore efficient alternative chemistries for ensuring 24/7 renewable power supply. He projected that India would generate 900 GW of electricity from non-fossil fuel sources in the next ten years. While declaring this decade as the decade of the Indian power sector, he called for a wider collaboration among industry partners across its value chain to make the sector a lighthouse of innovation and hope.    The event was graced by Shri R K Singh, the Hon’ble Minister of Power & New and Renewable Energy, Government of India as the chief guest. NTPC Limited has collaborated with the Indian Army to set up a solar hydrogen-based microgrid at Chushul in Ladakh, aimed at providing a stable, eco-friendly power supply for off-grid Army locations. Designed by NTPC, the innovative microgrid system will deliver 200 kW of power year-round, utilizing hydrogen as an energy storage solution. This project represents a substantial shift from diesel generators traditionally used in these remote, high-altitude locations. Situated at an elevation of 4,400 meters, where temperatures can drop to -30°C, this microgrid will ensure a continuous power supply to Army personnel stationed in challenging conditions. NTPC will oversee the project’s maintenance for 25 years, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable energy solutions and the well-being of Indian soldiers in extreme environments. THE IPPS MUST BE IMMEDIATELY NATIONALISED WITHOUT PAYMENT OF ANY COMPENSATION. After nationalisation, all the IPPS should be handed over to WAPDA to assess their efficiency. The efficient units should be allowed to supply power to the national grid and their tariff should be determined on the basis of Return on Assets at a maximum rate of 17% as is being currently done for the gas T&D companies. The inefficient plants should be scrapped and sold as junk and the amount so recovered should be paid to WAPDA for adjustment in consumers’ electricity bills. As the contracts signed with these companies were based on a totally illegal concept of Take or Pay, which is against the law of natural justice, they should not be entitled to any compensation whatsoever. No one can be paid for goods not supplied.
