I say this to every patient before giving my recommendation ... "Can I make a suggestion?" Whether they are a teen or an adult, I say this without fail. Why? Because it is a powerful way to build trust and connection. It shows the patient 3 things: 1. You respect their autonomy 2. You are not there to boss them around 3. You want to support their journey By asking for permission to share advice, you create a safe space where patients feel heard and understood. It signals that their thoughts and feelings matter, which fosters open communication and can lead to better outcomes. So the next time you're working with a patient, before you just jump to give your advice, start by asking, "Can I make a suggestion?" The 47 Second Attention Span That’s what it is right now – down from 75 seconds in 2012 according to CNN’s Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta. • Commercials have decreased to match the fading attention span from what was once the common 60 second spot, to 30 seconds, then 15 and now it’ not unusual to see 6-second commercials. • “There’s a fine line between attention and distraction” as almost everyone of all ages find themselves challenged to stay focused on what they are doing. • The key is to be both engaged and challenged and know when your best time is to focus says Dr. Gupta. Bedside manners matter. They are the cornerstone of a successful physician-patient relationship. And yes, they can be taught and improved upon. Some physicians naturally possess better interpersonal skills. Others need to learn and develop these skills. But why are they so important? Trust. By honing your bedside manners, you instill trust in your patients. This fosters a more positive patient-provider relationship. And how do we build trust? Consistency. Being reliable and transparent in your interactions with patients. Ensuring they know what to expect. It really is a simple formula Consistent bedside manners over time = trust.

It's the Global Medical Affairs Professional Society (MAPS) conference this week, and it reminded me of a personal moment of learning from last year's event that has stuck with me. At the end of one of the workshops I ran with Danie du Plessis on how to structure an Impactful Presentation, one of the attendees called me over. The guy quickly but kindly drew my attention to an improvement I could make to my performance in the Q&A section of the workshop. I learned that I'd used the common phrase, 'that's a great question,' before responding to a few of the questions raised. He explained this was not a good thing to do. The rationale is that if you always use a phrase like 'that's a great question', it means nothing. And if as is more likely you say it inconsistently, it is potentially discouraging to people asking questions because it suggests I was judging them. I'd perhaps be lying if I said that I've never since uttered a phrase like that over the last 12 months, but hopefully, they are now rare. It was useful feedback, and I'm glad the person generously took the time to share it with me. I hope you'll find some value in me repeating it. Professional body conferences like those organised by MAPS are great opportunities to connect, reflect, and increase our learning.
