In honor of Pride Month, we are honored to share our latest grantee blog from the world’s largest non-profit community of LGBTQ+ individuals working in tech: Out in Tech Out in Tech matches LBGTQ+ youth (ages 17-24) with mentors to help them develop the technical and professional skills needed for launching a meaningful career in engineering, product design, fintech, media, AI, and more. Last year, the organization announced it had graduated its 1,000th mentee. Today, Out in Tech graciously agreed to share what 1,000+ mentorships taught them about decoding student success. #CohenGive #pridemonth

🏳️🌈🌟 Let's Celebrate Pride Month Together! 🌟🏳️🌈 What better way to honor Pride Month than by empowering the next generation of LGBTQIA+ individuals in tech through mentorship? For LGBTQIA+ individuals, mentorship can help them navigate and overcome the additional barriers they often face. It can seem impossible to find someone with the same lived experiences who can light the way and show them it’s possible to succeed. At Wevise, we're committed to making tech careers and progression accessible to everyone. If you're an experienced professional in the tech industry, we invite you to join us as a mentor on the Wevise platform. We provide custom tags that allow mentors and mentees to match with people who have overcome similar barriers, such as LGBTQIA+, veterans, first-generation students, people of color, people with disabilities, single parents, and more. Your guidance could make a world of difference to someone's career journey. Dedicating just 1-2 hours a month can create a lasting impact. Don't wait to make a difference. Mentorship Matters: Empowering Black Girls in STEM It's critical to acknowledge and address Black girls' underrepresentation in STEM professions as we work toward greater diversity and inclusion in these fields. By using the Critical Race Theory framework, one can establish a connection between the racialize experiences of individuals in mentoring relationships and larger systems of racism at the macro level. In order to address systemic difficulties within higher education and STEM, there are conversations emphasizing the need for race-consciousness and anti-racist mentor training programs. Black girls may be neglected and face specific challenges when pursuing professions in STEM. A sense of belonging can be fostered through mentoring. Feelings of significance, connection, inclusion, support, encouragement, affirmation, and validation are all included in the concept of belonging. For this reason, mentorship is essential in giving Black girls who are interested in STEM access, support, and direction. Through the sharing of success stories about how mentorship makes a difference, we can empower and encourage the next wave of Black women in STEM. A critical race theorist named Franz Fanon is well-known for his theory that systemic racism, which is supported by white society, has ingrained in Black minds a sense of inferiority that, in spite of Black people's best efforts to resist it, ultimately distorts Black consciousness and self-perception (Novey,2021). Mentorship in conjunction with supportive feedback can help dispel this notion in the black community. Your mentorship can have a long-lasting effect whether you're a STEM enthusiast, industry leader, or university researcher. Together, let's promote inclusion, equity, and diversity in STEM.By working together, we can build a more inclusive and equitable future while also empowering Black girls in STEM fields. Next Steps: Brown Sugar Theory Thank you to everyone who participated in my POP linked to Critical Race Theory campaign. This has helped dive deeper into my "Brown Sugar Theory - When Did You Fall In Love With STEM" campaign! This has sparked important discussions and highlighted the importance of representation in STEM. Moving forward, I'm excited to facilitate mentorship pairings and organize virtual meetups to encourage mentorship. Join me in celebrating the power of mentorship and amplifying the voices of Black girls in STEM. Together, we can break down barriers, foster a more inclusive environment, and create pathways to success for all. Are you passionate about mentoring and supporting underrepresented groups in STEM, particularly Black girls? I am seeking volunteers who are willing to lend their expertise and guidance to empower aspiring Black girls in STEM. Inbox me if you are interested. #Mentorship #STEM #BlackGirlsInSTEM #DiversityandInclusion
