Who allocates to and pays for long-term #underperformance? Cohen & Steers announced on April 2 the launch of the Future of Energy Strategy which according to the company is a transition of the fund formerly known as Cohen & Steers MLP & Energy Opportunity Fund (NYSE: MLOIX). The fund has underperformed its stated benchmarks (the fund has had three different versions of benchmarks since launch ca 10 years ago, one for only 20 months) pretty much continuously over 1yr (-2.6%), 5yr (-2.64% pa), 10yr (-2.23% pa) and since inception (-1.94% pa), significant long-term underperformance. According to the press release... "We believe a dynamic, actively managed portfolio with investments that span the full energy investment universe should provide investors with a superior allocation to the sector. Our strategy is grounded in a fundamental view on how the industry will evolve and driven by allocations between traditional and alternative energy as well as alpha from stock selection amidst secular change." ... "The Fund continues to be managed by portfolio managers Tyler Rosenlicht and Ben Morton and is supported by a team of 10 investment professionals who specialize in covering the energy sector across listed infrastructure, natural resource equities and sustainable investments." In addition, the Fund’s benchmarks will also change again(!) to the S&P Energy Select Sector Index and the company's own it seems, Cohen & Steers Energy Aggregate Blend Price Index (!)...
