Insights on Sydney’s ever-evolving Chinatown! 🏮 Hopeful Monster, Tiffany Seeto, had the privilege to learn about the dynamic future of Chinatown at SXSW Sydney. With Eddie Ma at the helm, and the brilliant perspectives of Brad Chan, Qianyi Lim, and Dan Hong, they explored the profound significance of this cultural hub for generations of Asian-Australians. Tiffany Seeto: “I attended this session out of selfish reasons as a Chinese-Australian who always gravitates to Sydney’s Chinatown and Chinatowns in other cities. Chinatowns were established to be a safe haven for first generation Chinese migrants in new cities. However, the traditional role of Sydney’s Chinatown is being thrown into question and the panel spoke on the challenges and opportunities the precinct is facing today to ensure the next generation of Asian-Australians are provided the same space that it was intended to be. The panel highlighted the importance of preserving Chinatown's essence through community-driven initiatives and fostering intergenerational connections. With a focus on both physical infrastructure and intangible heritage, they emphasized the need to create spaces that facilitate cultural engagement, such as green areas for communal activities and opportunities for youth to explore their heritage.” #ChinatownLegacy #CulturalPreservation #SxSWSydney
