As we come to a close in Mental Health Awareness Month let us acknowledge the importance of mental health and access to services. Did you know that Medicare Part B covers certain outpatient mental health services? This includes one depression screening per year, family counseling (to help with treatment), psychiatric evaluations, and medication management. Keep in mind that these services are conducted in a doctor's office or other health care provider's office, a hospital outpatient department, or a community mental health center. If your family has history of mental illness, you may be wondering if there’s a way to memorialize your wishes in your estate plan in the event a psychiatric episode renders you unable to make decisions about your treatment. A psychiatric advance directive may be the answer. Around half of the states have psychiatric advance directive statutes, which authorize special advance directives to outline one’s wishes with respect to mental health care. You can also appoint a representative to make decisions regarding your care. A psychiatric advance directive may address a variety of mental health care issues, including treatment therapies and medications that may (or may not) be administered. #HertzHerson #EstatePlanning
