In August, Constant Contact's Black, Women and Able Affinity groups (ERGs), co-sponsored viewings of Arise Firebird by Folajimi Worldwide as well as a discussion with director Jimi Okubanjo. The documentary shares the powerful, personal stories of black women who were driven out of the workplace due to the discrimination, attitudes, behaviors and outright disrespect directed at them. The documentary equally shares their inspirational resilience after removing themselves from the lion's cage, and each finding paths of fulfillment. This experience opened my eyes and heart to deeply emotional stories and experiences; it has resurged a spark to help leaders understand what inclusion, allyship and a respectful workplace truly feel like; and it reminded me that we each have the ability to change the world for the better - one person at a time. Mental Health advocacy and awareness is something I am immeasurably passionate about. As a person who has struggled with my own mental health and as an HR leader, it is a topic that has my full attention. This is why I decided to have Mental Health Awareness in the Workplace at the center of my dissertation.
