How Education Came to Influence My Fatherhood By Jerome Danner (Gré Motiv) 2018 was quite the year for me. I became a father for the second time. Two months later, I darkened the doors of a public school for the first time, hoping to enlighten young minds. In the beginning, I thought my fatherhood would influence my profession as an educator. After six years in education, I have come to believe that my vocation has had more of an impact on my calling (my state as a father). When You Are New to Teaching When you are new to teaching, it is easy to come in the halls of a public school with high hopes. You may even have visions of grandeur with thoughts of kids floating in and out of your classroom on cloud nine believing that you are the greatest teacher that they have ever had. (Okay, maybe this was only me.) Nevertheless, blind optimism is soon extinguished by a jolt of reality. When one starts to engage with teenagers and pre-teens, you start to realize that they do not enter your classroom with a longing to grow intellectually. Many of them, maybe most of them, will be dismissive of you and your class altogether. The new educator wants to make a difference in these young people’s lives. Yet, the real difference will take place within them. https://lnkd.in/ei4S6Vyh #teacher #educator #father #parenting

Seeking the middle ground in a divided world. Dad. Husband. Writer. Former video game exec and head of a bamboo school.
The adult mind works a little bit differently than the teen mind. We adults tend to look ahead to the future, plan, and make To-do lists for our To-do lists. The world is less safe and unpredictable in our eyes. This is all true. And it isn’t. To a teen, the world ahead is a blank slate. Too blank for our adult eyes. So we feel compelled to populate the emptiness. We want a few things written on the slate so we feel better that they have some idea as to where they might be heading. So they tell us what we want to hear. I am going to be a doctor. Next year I am taking a well-planned gap year. I just got accepted into university. I am going to start my own business. Some or all of it may be true. The reality is none of it is true as we already know. They will change their paths and careers just as we did. They will get married and divorced just as we did. They will have their ups and downs no matter how much we are there for them. Just as we had in our life. But they will be OK. How do you help students feel like they belong at school? By giving them a safe space to build connections and share emotional check-ins with peers. Here's how our three middle schools — Barr, Walnut, Westridge — came together to implement "Middle School Advisory Time". A collaborative, daily effort to help middle school students feel seen, heard, and empowered. Watch our short documentary on the power of a unified approach to "Bulldog Time", "Cougar Time", & "Wildcat Time". READ & WATCH: https://trst.in/qk56yt -- #WeAreGIPS

Proudly Southeast Asian. Creating spaces for courageous leaders across generations and backgrounds to grow.
practicing human-centred design to improve schools would look something like this: 1. ask students (and parents and teachers!) about their experiences, joys and pain points in the current system 2. get them to dream about what their ideal school would look like 3. do this until we understand the problem this one child has articulated issues clearer than many policymakers can...or are able to. I hope to hear more! not to leave to the next generation to build, but for our generation to act. thanks John Tan for this honest and thought-provoking post.
Can MOE please just ask the kids how they feel about school? They are the protagonists after all. The message from this kid rings true. I hear the same from my kids. I don’t know if the powers that be are feckless, clueless, out of touch, or all of the above, but this is the reality for our kids. They deserve better. EveryChild.SG

"Deciding to homeschool my four daughters was formed in a group setting, as I was surrounded by brilliant friends, and resilience and passion were our common denominators. It was the 1980s, where a yet-unknown boom was about to take place, and we were on the front lines." Read the full article here: https://loom.ly/dky6v9g -- Enjoying Intellectual Takeout?
