I think it’s wrong to say that St. James’s Place “employs 1 in 8 of the UK’s 38,000 financial advisers”. SJP doesn’t make any money by giving financial advice, it derives its income from the charges it makes on its products and investments. It gets those products and investments to market through a lot of sales reps who masquerade as financial advisers. Their primary role is to represent SJP and to sell its product range. My second point would be that a large proportion of that sales force is actually self employed - and that puts them under even more pressure to flog SJP products particularly if they are one of those who has borrowed a lot of money from SJP or its banking connections to buy and set up their own franchise! I think SJP likes it like that simply because it thinks forcing sales people to sell or starve sells more product. I also think that rather blows its credibility when it claims to prioritise clients best interests and look after the mental well being of its Agents. Apart from that this is a great article that exposes much about what is so wrong & abhorrent about this particular business model.

I am pleased to be featured in EisnerAmper's Solutions In Sight Middle Market M&A Video Series. This time, EisnerAmper tax partner Jordan Amin, CPA, Scott Daspin, Director of Investment Banking at Triad Securities Corp., and I discussed the emotional aspects of selling a business. We had a lively discussion regarding the emotions sellers commonly experience amidst a business sale and the ripple effect the process has on personal and professional relationships.
