Cities that struggle with the grief and pain of the war machine are not normally the subject of research. Scholars tend to focus on the bright position of cities as center for progress and the cradle of civilizations. As an architect urbanist, I am very interested in urban development in diverse contexts. I am also interested in understanding how cities and their inhabitants experience the collapse of their cities and the impacts of this dark history of cities not only on the urban physical infrastructure but also on the collective memory and perception of home. such understanding is crucial for any urban regeneration and city remaking process.
In the midst of an unbearable pain, rage and grief we will discuss around urbicide and the horizons for city-remaking with brilliant speakers from Palestine, Lebanon, Syria and Iraq. Thank you Nurhan Abujidi, Abir Saksouk-Sasso, Ammar Azzouz, PhD, and Sana Murrani for accepting the invitation and to Muzna Al-Masri for co-organising this initiative. The hybrid event will take place in Oct 23 at 5:00 pm UK time.

My passion for trees in the urban space is showing (revised post). Sharing Rachel Kaplan's 2004 study on the social impact if tree populations in the urban setting. The Kaplans remain as my inspiration on pioneering "place" studies, bridging the relationship of man and one's setting. #WLAM #Day19 #IFLAAPR #PALA https://lnkd.in/dadHUFWe

Prior to high-rises, the skyline was governed by castles, churches, palaces, municipal towers, domes, clock towers, and observatories. Mindful communities insisted that their skylines be dominated by their most significant institutions. Until 1986, Philadelphia had no structure taller than the statue of William Penn atop City Hall: 548 feet (167 m). The right bank of Kyiv, draped in golden autumn vibes, is especially charming. It’s one of those views that always moves me, carrying memories and symbols that embody the spirit of the city. I vividly remember the day I moved from Donetsk to make Kyiv my home. The Paton Bridge, shown in this photo, became a symbolic passage into a new chapter — a bridge from my new home to my new workplace. There was a time when a tram ran across this bridge — an eco-friendly and nostalgic mode of transport I often used to travel from the left bank to the right. Over time, however, the tram disappeared, giving way to cars, as the city evolved alongside shifting priorities and rhythms. But it wasn’t only transportation that changed — the skyline of Kyiv transformed as well. New buildings, competing for height, now stretch upward, striving to match the grandeur of the Great Lavra Bell Tower, subtly disrupting the city’s historical harmony. The left bank, once spacious, has become a dense forest of high-rises and cars, leaving little room for air and open spaces. And yet, despite occasional misguided urban development and disregard for architectural heritage, Kyiv remains a city capable of offering peace and solace. Its parks still harbor quiet corners for reflection and rest. Kyiv lives on, resilient in the face of war, enduring change, and looking toward the future with unwavering hope and dignity. #Kyiv #PatonBridge #AutumnInKyiv #UrbanDevelopment #CityHistory #Architecture #UrbanHeritage #UkraineRebuilding #LifeInKyiv #Resilience #FutureOfUkraine #StandWithUkraine #CitySpirit #KyivSkyline #SustainableCities #Ukraine #StandwithUkraine #Wartime #Autumn #Life
