Last week the Prime Minister announced a comprehensive support package at the Farm to Fork Summit at Downing Street. This initiative aims to enhance domestic food production, stimulate sector innovation, and attract future farming and food leaders and includes a new blueprint for growing the UK fruit and vegetable sector, encouraging industry-government collaboration to boost production and investment. The package includes: Access to affordable, sustainable energy and water. Simplified planning processes for building glasshouses. Doubling horticulture funding to £80 million through Defra, compared to the previous EU scheme. It also saw the introduction of the first draft Food Security Index to monitor and safeguard the UK’s food security. Additional measures include: Extending the Farming Recovery Fund to assist farmers affected by wet weather. Allocating £75 million to support internal drainage boards for storm recovery and infrastructure modernisation. Implementing regulations to ensure fairness in the fresh produce and egg sectors. Environment Secretary Steve Barclay emphasised the importance of food security and the role of innovative farming techniques in providing year-round British produce. Farming Minister Mark Spencer reiterated the government's commitment to supporting British farmers through investment, business advice, and reducing regulatory burdens. This second annual summit continues the collaboration between the government and the farming and food sectors to drive growth and resilience.

🐮 🌽 🐔 It was great to be back in No.10 this morning for the second annual Farm to Fork summit, where the PM set out the next steps in our plan to back British farmers and food security. That is why we are publishing the first ever UK Food Security Index, setting out the Blueprint for Growing the UK Fruit and Vegetable Sector, and ensuring the sector has the labour it needs through the Shropshire Review, and ensuring fairness in the supply chain. Farming is the lifeblood of our rural communities, feeding the nation and stewarding our green and pleasant land. However, we still do not grow enough food domestically and can go further in boosting the British farming industry. We are sticking to the plan to back British farmers in their primary role of growing food, investing in food security and growing resilient farming businesses to feed the nation for generations to come.

Just read this from the NFU (National Farmers' Union) Now we know who the new Government is I think as Countryside Professionals we should make an effort to keep them accountable to these Pledges for the Environment and Farming. Ultimately I don't think it matter which party is in power as long as they are making a real effort to support and improve our Countryside, Environment and Farming https://ow.ly/p6tY50SuyfH

Advocating for Western agriculture is crucial for food security and our local economy. During my recent trip to Washington, D.C., I highlighted the need for reliable water supplies, infrastructure investment, and balanced regulations to sustain American food production. Let’s ensure our voices are heard and protect the future of farming in the West!

Food and farming have been largely given a backseat or had a haphazard effort for assistance and adequate funding and support. We desperately need change if we are to turn ourselves out of the food crisis and stop relying on food from outside the borders. Also, don't forget about #cereals which are massively underestimated at how important they are to feed the UK and also suffering from changes in weather conditions. Health and happiness are at the forefront of a healthy food system. Let's get this on the top of the agenda. Your voice is heard. #systemschange #foodanddrink #ukgrain #ukfood #supportlocalfarms #foodsystems #biodiversity #slowfood #elections #foodsecurity

Food is a key driver of non-communicable disease – disease that is costing the NHS £130bn+ a year and causing 90% of premature deaths. That is heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes and chronic lung disease. It also costs productivity dearly, via the absence of workers who are sick with it. And it costs families their loved ones, and costs many people their friends. The demise of UK agriculture costs us our food security. Bringing food from abroad via trade agreements costs the environment. And yet so little is ever done about this, by any government. #food #farming #health #foodpolicy

New figures from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs reveal a concerning trend in farmers' confidence, with half not feeling positive about their future in farming. Of those making changes, a quarter plan to reduce business size, and 14% intend to exit farming in the next three to five years. The government emphasizes the need for revamped farming schemes to support all farmers, including those often overlooked, like small, grassland, upland, and tenanted farms. Secretary of state Steve Reed outlines plans to boost stability, prevent undercuts in trade deals, and enhance food security. The government's initiatives include optimizing Environmental Land Management schemes, seeking a new veterinary agreement with the EU, safeguarding farmers from trade undercuts, and backing British produce through government procurement. The focus is on driving rural economic growth, ensuring fair supply chains, and enhancing flood resilience and nature recovery in a just and equitable manner. 🚜👨🌾The new farming minister Daniel Zeichner is dedicated to enhancing Britain's food security with a new deal for farmers. Recently, over 130 MPs and Peers gathered at an NFU (National Farmers' Union) reception one day after The Labour Party outlined its priorities in the King’s Speech. During the event, Crossbench peer Lord Carrington sponsored the gathering and highlighted the importance of addressing the challenges farmers are facing. Minister Zeichner acknowledged the pressures on farmers and emphasized the need for stability in businesses as a primary goal. The new Labour government is focused on supporting the agricultural transition through environmental land management schemes and ensuring the system works effectively for farmers. Zeichner emphasized the critical link between food security and national security, aligning with Labour's mission to boost the economy. To achieve these goals, the government plans to secure a new veterinary agreement with the EU and prevent farmers from being undermined by low standards in trade agreements. NFU President Tom Bradshaw reflected on the past 18 months, noting the struggles farmers have endured due to adverse weather conditions and economic challenges. Despite these difficulties, farmers have remained resilient in keeping the nation fed. The event highlighted the public's positive perception of farmers, with a recent NFU survey revealing that 74% of the public views farmers favourably, recognizing the importance of farming to the UK economy. Lord Carrington stressed the need for concrete actions to address food security challenges and allocate a budget to support the shift towards a more secure food system.
