Who's seen the new Blue Angels documentary?! Or better yet, who's seen them IRL?? For those who don’t know, the Blue Angels are the United States Navy's flight demonstration squadron. Watching these incredibly skilled pilots soar through the skies with precision and teamwork was nothing short of inspiring. Thank you Ashley Liu Kirkman for the movie recommendation! Three takeaways from the Blue Angels documentary: 1. Excellence over Perfection: There was a line in the movie, "We’re not going to get to perfection, but we’re going to get to excellence." Perfection is a lofty goal, but excellence is achievable and sustainable. 2. Gratitude and Team Spirit: The pilots often say "glad to be here," a simple phrase that carries a lot of weight. It's a reminder to appreciate the opportunity to work with an amazing team. 3. Attention to Detail: The Blue Angels fly as close as 18 inches apart at more than 400 mph, where precision and trust are everything. This attention to detail ensures their performances are safe and spectacular. Similarly, in work, paying attention to the little things can make a big difference. DARPA’s Air Combat Evolution (ACE) program has achieved a world first for #AI in aerospace, using AI algorithms to autonomously fly against a human pilot in real-world, within-visual-range combat scenarios (sometimes referred to as “dogfighting”). https://lnkd.in/eRRUmPxb In this 7-minute video, team members discuss what makes the ACE program unlike other aerospace autonomy projects and how it represents a transformational moment in aerospace history, establishing a foundation for ethical, trusted, human-machine teaming for complex military and civilian applications. In flight, the ACE AI algorithms controlled a specially modified F-16 test aircraft known as the X-62A, or VISTA (Variable In-flight Simulator Test Aircraft), at the Air Force Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base, California, where all demonstrations of autonomous combat maneuvers took place in 2023 and are continuing in 2024.

- 1st year as an Air Force pilot was pure hell. - 2nd year was still hard but better than the first. - 3rd year was the best. We would have more and more "freedom" year after year. But then, even if one piece of that freedom would be taken away for one day... It would always feel really hard, because we were used to something better. And now my clients still ask me: "How were you able to persist all these years building your business?" The truth: I've been through worse times. And that is always going to be the answer. Jim Leeke slips readers into the world just after World War II (WW II) ended, in 1946, with the race inspired by competition for not losing identity in a newly formed united military—the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The race was between the U.S. Navy (USN) and the U.S. Army Air Forces (AAF). The aircraft could hardly have been more different—the Navy’s brand new Lockheed P2V Neptune and the AAF’s mature Boeing B-29 Superfortress. Navy versus Army. Lockheed versus Boeing. One flight primarily challenged by a long flight over the expanse of the Pacific Ocean and the other crossing over the magnetically deranged North Pole. A lot was on the table and Leeke tells the story of brilliantly as well as evocatively. The race is about the Navy’s Truculent Turtle and the AAF’s Pacusan Dreamboat and what a race it was! Unheard of great circle routes across hemispheres with changing weather being only one of the challenges faced by these innovative flights crews. New navigation challenges, fuel burn awareness and deeply intimate knowledge of the each aircraft, sleep deprivation, long periods with no possibility of radio contact much less radio navigation. These flight crews were working at the absolute thinnest edge of the day’s technology performance envelope. The Neptune was a brand new design powered by two radial engines. The B-29 was a venerable design with four radial engines. The Navy had the role of defending on the high seas and rightly feared losing defense budget monies to the Air Force. The Neptune's arrival on-scene could not have been more opportune since the AAF was setting distance and load-to-altitude records nearly as fast as the newspapers could be printed to report them. ultra-long fights using great circle routes became the new norm. Was the Pacific Ocean able to be routinely crossed without island hopping? Could routes between Europe and North America be shortened by thousands of miles using polar great circle routes? These were significant and nerve wracking questions of potential which airlines did not have the money to research themselves. Flight planning and preparation of these military aircraft for their flights make being head coach of an NFL team seem like prepping for a game of Dodge Ball. The risks were great—an engine failure during the long periods of communication blackouts, mountains and heavy weather, icing (neither aircraft was equipped with deicing equipment) and Saint Elmo’s fire were a few. In the end two fantastic flights were accomplished (one a new record) within days of one another and with no casualties. Thankfully, one aircraft ended up in a museum—restored and placed on display after years of gate guard duty exposed to the elements. Myopically, the other, even after many long distance and record setting flights, was scrapped—leaving only photos and memories behind for us. This book also belongs to those who read about explorers and feel simpatico with that special urge to do what has not been done.

Raising the bar for professional testers! So exciting. I hope that "Sting's" course or ones like it spread to every organization involved in flight testing that doesn't have formal flight tester training as part of their credentialing. The next question is, how can this academic training be integrated with airmanship experience for FTEs who are not aviators or need a deeper knowledge of their SUT. Flying, sims, and mixed-reality VR can all be part of this solution.
Final day of my Test Foundations for Flight Test course for AIAA. A huge thank you to David Kern with Daedalus Aerospace, LLC, Wei Lee and Raven LeClair for the excellent real-world examples to add to the class. I really enjoyed putting together this class and I can't wait to do it again! I have lots of ideas for creating more content and open source resources for teams out there. Ok... time to enjoy my "summer break" and get back to teaching at USAF TPS!

Here's a fascinating twist: During the war, military analysts studied planes returning from missions, riddled with bullet holes in the wings, tail, and fuselage. The #logical solution? Reinforce those areas to improve survival rates. But statistician Abraham Wald, based in the U.S, saw beyond the obvious. He realized they were only seeing the planes that survived. The missing insight? The planes that didn't return likely suffered hits in vital, unarmored areas like the #engine. Wald's groundbreaking idea? Reinforce where the returning #planes showed no damage.
