Summer internships are starting, meaning thousands of first-generation college students will enter a professional environment for the first time. This is such a golden opportunity that shouldn't go to waste. Unfortunately, that's the case for many interns and companies across the country. With just a little bit of time and intention, companies can create life-changing internship experiences for these soon-to-be First-Generation Professionals while getting a leg up on identifying high-potential talent to bring on full-time. Sharing my thoughts below, and would love to hear yours! --- In my first job, a skill I learned that still serves me today is... the value of adaptability. Early in my career, interning with eSports & convention marketing campaigns, I quickly realized that no event or project ever goes exactly as planned. Whether it was resolving unexpected issues like a tardy vendor or finding creative solutions on the fly, expecting the unexpected made all the difference. The fast-paced environment and long hours of the event world have taught me that success often times comes from anticipating needs and taking decisive action quickly. How you react to the curveballs thrown your way is a critical aspect of quality success and leadership. These lessons in adaptability and proactive problem-solving have not only shaped my professional journey but also enriched my personal life. Despite all our planning, we never 100% know what’s coming next - and that unpredictability is what makes the journey exciting! Where have all the internships gone? There’s been a lot of talk around the decline of internships this year, as top companies have looked to cut costs by reducing the amount of young workers they’re welcoming onto their sought-after summer programs. Per data from student job search site Handshake, some key industries have been cooling on intern programs, with internship postings down in tech (-14%) and financial services (-13%) year-over-year in May ‘24. When we ask people to share their strange experiences from unpaid internships. It becomes evident that some companies have expectations from interns comparable to those of mid-level designers. This raises concerns, and in my opinion, there is room for improvement in ensuring fair and reasonable expectations for interns. We can do better
