The economics of Memorial Day The unofficial start of #summer and a reason for retailers to offer mega-deals (a more serious post will follow tomorrow)... ▪️57% of Americans plan to celebrate (Numerator) ▪️AAA predicts the second highest #travel forecast for Memorial Day since 2000 with 43.8 million people traveling ▪️Food and alcoholic #beverages are the top 2 categories on shopping lists ▪️Beer is the top choice for alcoholic beverages at 76% (those planning to buy alcohol) ▪️Gen Z is twice as likely to choose hard seltzers or canned cocktails (88% vs. 35% avg) while Boomers are more likely to choose wine (51% vs. 42% avg) #Food and #beer prices although starting to stabilize are still up from last year: 🥩Steaks have increased in price 6.5% YoY 🍔Ground beef increased in price 6% YoY 🌭Hot dogs increased in price 7.1% YoY 🍻Beer prices increased in price 3% YoY Later today my husband and I will be taking a trip to Costco Wholesale to shop for the #BBQ we will be hosting. Costco on a Friday afternoon is not for the faint of heart. Wish us luck! I’m looking forward to our tri-boro #parade on Monday. Attending has become a new family #tradition for us. Meet Pamela. The other day, she was performing a sampling demo, and a Costco member returned to Pamela's cart. The member presented Pamela with a bag of Lindor Truffles (and the receipt for it, so she'd be able to take it home). The reason, she said, was because Pamela was so friendly, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic while performing her demo. Pamela was utterly surprised and didn't even want to accept the gift but the member insisted. (And Pam ended up offering to share the candy with her teammates, because she's a great person.) Our job isn't life-altering. We aren't operating on the injured, nor negotiating peace between warring factions. We are presenting products to the public, engaging them and hopefully turning them on to their new favorite foods, household goods, and services. We provide a valuable service to companies large and small, global and local. And every day, all day, we smile, we give away free food and other fun products, and we build connections with the people in our communities. Kansas City’s first Black Feast Week kicked off this week. In the coming days, I’m going to have some tough decisions to make about lunch or dinner plans. Through Oct. 14, more than a dozen Black-owned restaurants will band together to help support Willa’s Books and Vinyl, the city’s longest standing Black-owned bookstore. Not only is it vital to support locally-owned small businesses — we must ensure this venerable store remains a part of our community. Independent bookstores, especially Black-owned ones, are extremely important to the culture here. Sixteen restaurants will take part. The fare ranges from delicious vegan options to some of the tastiest fried foods in the city. Also on tap: Ethiopian and soul food dishes, as well as several unique loaded baked potato options from TC’s Fully Loaded food truck. Kansas City’s first Black-owned brewery, Vine Street Brewing Co., is offering deals on beer flights. Hungry or thirsty yet?
