Sport England is investing in local communities, specifically in those places where it is hardest to be active. Physical activity is vital for our physical and mental health, from walking to work to playing sports with friends. But not all of us have the same opportunities to be active. When children don’t have safe spaces to run and play, when adults are working long hours and constantly worrying about making ends meet, it makes it harder to be active and healthy. Through placed-based working we can work deeply in a place, developing meaningful partnerships with communities and the organisations that support them – this is why we are calling the work ‘Place Partnerships’. With these partnerships in place we can better co-design opportunities which make it easier for residents to be active when they step out of their homes. To achieve this, we’re looking to develop ‘Place Partnerships’ in Derby, Nottingham, Erewash and Ashfield and we’ve a number of exciting new roles to help make this happen. I'm 10 years into my career in games and I've worked on at least a dozen titles at this point, and with the release of The Plucky Squire, I just wanna take a moment to talk about the formula of team I've been focusing on working with the last 5 years, and why it works. Specifically my work with The Plucky Squire, Game of Thrones: A Tale of Crows, Bean Si, Frayed Freedom and Chinatown Detective Agency, that are all games made with remote teams that are based all over the world (to a lesser extent Math Makers, that is remote but Montreal only based). This has become my favorite kind of team and a bit of a specialization. Of course there's a negatives with forming a team like this; trying to coordinate across timezones will always be difficult, and a very high level of communication and trust is required in literally every team member. Things can fall apart quicker then when in an office, so a close eye is needed - but every formula of team comes with it's downsides. I truly believe this way of working has waaay more upsides that make it worth it. For one, you are open to hiring the VERY best person for a role regardless of age, gender, location or disability. It truly is the best way to hire diversely. As someone with the disabled status, I have so much freedom with my time and hours, because in general, we have to work asynchronously and systems are set up to account for that. I literally could not have done my job the last few years without this setup otherwise - but that's another post entirely. Additionally, I find people do their best work when they have that kind of flexibility. Need to run to the doctors today? Sure no problem. Having a bad head day? Hey take a half day, you're the master of your time. Aside from set weekly meetings, people work when makes sense for them. So much less time is wasted on trying to focus when we're just not feeling well or distracted by other things. Communication is key! In general, I've been saying that a game dev team should be built on a basis of consent, trust and respect. Remote in this way succeeding requires it even more so, and it creates a sense of individual ownership with peoples work and time that I believe helps keep them passionate and motivated even in difficult spots, which happen in any production. In 5 years so far I've helped 3 successful launches with this model, and another 2 underway, so I'd say we're doing something right! Anyways, The Plucky Squire is my latest project with this model, and it's launch has gone exceedingly well today! I hope you all get a chance to play and enjoy the world the team created =] https://lnkd.in/dGrCgWVc

At Codingscape, your job title is not who you are. It’s the role you play on the team. Here’s how I explain it to employees at Codingscape using basketball as an example 👇 During the late 90s, Scottie Pippen’s role on the Chicago Bulls without Michael Jordan was much different than it was when Jordan was on the team. Pippen himself knew this. In ‘96 and ‘97, he was absolutely the star. He was the top scorer and regularly made amazing plays. But when Jordan came back in ‘98? Pippen stepped back. He realized his role was to get the ball to Jordan and be a secondary threat on the court. He could have let his ego get the better of him but luckily he recognized that he could be useful elsewhere to the team. It’s the same thing with our teams here at Codingscape. Somebody could be a tech lead on one project and the next project may not call for them to do that. It's not a demotion and it's not a step backward. It's just that the team composition looks different for the game that needs to be played. We’re flexible here about moving people towards where we need them the most. No one here worries about their job security when this happens. They recognize that we’re just reconstructing the teams to figure out the best way to serve our clients. Here, your role and your responsibilities matter much more than your job title.

Turning awkward "team building" into authentic, fun camaraderie through remote trivia leagues | Chief Nerd at Anywhere League | Source of random facts
Think employees have to be in-person to form relationships? Allow me to introduce The Corvids. This is a group of people who got along so well together playing Anywhere League at a previous company they all worked for, they kept on playing even when they left for different jobs. Yes, they’re all on new teams at new companies. But they still hang out together in our remote trivia league calls. They’re the main reason I get so angry when people say going back to the office is better for team relationships. Y’all, I’ve even planned vacations around being able to stop in and see some of these people – my customers. And I just host the quiz! So stop with the “We need to be in-person!” nonsense. Real relationships based on trust, respect, and having fun together can definitely happen online. Maybe you’ve tried hosting online team-building and it was awkward. The challenge is: an open forum doesn’t work. You need something to do together with a shared goal. That’s where games can play a powerful role. Check out this video to learn more about The Corvids and how Anywhere League turns awkward "team building" into authentic, fun experiences!

Why I only hire people who played team sports?!? Team sports is one of the few places left in the world where people learn to “put the team above themselves”. Most of the world is self serving and the best employees (and people) are those that can serve a purpose greater than themselves. What sports did you play and what did you learn from them that has made you successful tell me with a comment below?

⭐️🚀Thrilled to share that I recently organized one of the most successful events in my career, achieving the highest satisfaction scores from attendees! Transforming the concept for a one-day event into something new and unique for our local community was challenging but immensely rewarding. 🤔There were moments of doubt about whether people would embrace the new approach, but the results exceeded all expectations. 🚀For me, effective team building is about fostering genuine connections and communication, offering an informal space where people can engage freely—whether it's through games, dancing, or just having conversations without any pressure. 💡One of the key lessons I’ve learned early in my career was that you can't force people into activities they’re not comfortable with. 🎯Our concept embraced this by providing a variety of options: board games, group challenges, casual mingling, and opportunities to relax. And yes, the party element was definitely there!⚽️🏐🧩🪩🎉 🌟This blend of diverse experiences made the team building event one of the best I've organized. 📢A huge shoutout to our incredible partners: NewEvents Vision Temenuga Krasteva, Valeri Stoychev, Elena Popova, and #ForestVakarel. Your support was indispensable in making this event a success. 🤝Trusted partners truly make all the difference in executing impactful ideas.🏆 Looking forward to more engaging events in the future!
