One of my favourite avenues for my Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is to attend conferences. I've been to them in person and online - and hosted them online and in-person for The Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (The CISI). In this article for FT Adviser I ponder how well we engage with online conferences and ask if in-person conferences are just a crutch for the easily distracted. Time is precious (and limited) so we need to be intentional in how we engage. Read to the end to hear my top five tips to get the most out of in-person conferences. https://lnkd.in/ea4GyPBK

Next week is another Welcoming Australia symposium and our team have had the pleasure to attend almost every single one. We have always been impressed in how Welcoming Australia have been a step ahead of so many other conferences in the sector. During this time we have seen Welcoming Australia continually challenge themselves and others with an incredible array of speakers who have been able to tell their stories on their own terms, providing a platform for communities doing the work on the ground, and moving away from the white saviour storytelling complex. So our team are super excited to be working with Welcoming Australia to apply the T.E.S.T. framework across the symposium’s policies, processes and practices. One of the first things we identified as an area for improvement was updating the consent form and process as this is an area we rarely see done well. We generally see organisations use a transactional, one-sided consent policy and process where all IP is owned by the organisation and “can be used for any purpose, worldwide, in perpetuity, without remuneration”. So with Jennifer Johannesen from For Purpose Advisory and the Welcoming Australia team we developed a consent form, attendee terms and process with speakers and attendees which rebalances how someone’s image/recording (Story) will be used and for how long. As part of this we developed this short video for symposium participants. If you know anyone attending the symposium or know someone organising an event or conference where this consent process could help them, share this with them. If you would like to connect with our team and discuss how you can implement safe, ethical storytelling in your events, research and art projects and/or community programs you can get in touch with our team at https://lnkd.in/d7Qd7t6H https://lnkd.in/d9S4avA7 #TEST #ethicalstorytelling #flippingthepower #storytelling #StoryHolder #StoryCaretaker #WhoGetsToTellTheStory #StoryOwnership #FreePriorOngoingInformedConsent Dung Tran Colin Kinchela 🇵🇸 Doug Cronin Vuli Mkwananzi Aleem Ali Niyati Acharya Sebastian Geers Türkan Aksoy Kate Leaney Maia Tua- Davidson

Conferences offering an online option should really continue for many reasons. There are several people who can't make it to in-person events for various reasons. Note that we don't have sit and pass judgements mansplaining the merits of in-person events. Everyone knows those, but to each, their own. I have been attending events online since 2019 (yes, there were some pre-covid events which allowed online participation of speakers in certain circumstances). The two worst online conferences for me so far were LREC-2022 and LREC-2024 which happened a few weeks ago, 2022 being rock bottom. They also turned out to be the most expensive ones for online attendance. They are good quality events with good collection of talks and papers -I don't doubt that. But the online attendance experience is just terrible. And I see these kind of options in the conference feedback form I got today - they have an over-zealous online attendee here :-) At least have the guts to throw in a few negative options there, folks! (e.g., "It was not easy to use" at least, if not "It is terrible", which it was?) #nlproc #conference #conflux #onlineattendance #fridayrant

Association - conferences what do you need to be aware of.. Our friends at Cvent have put together this amazing checklist for planning conferences, check it out on the Membership World community Common objectives of a large-scale conference Deliver educational content to members: A key objective of association conferences is to provide professional development and educational opportunities for association members. Conferences can equip association members with the tools and insights needed to stay ahead in their respective fields. Advocacy and industry promotion: Conferences serve as a platform for associations to promote and advocate for their industries. They bring together professionals from various organisations, allowing them to showcase their work, products, and services to a wider audience, such as policymakers, media representatives, and potential clients. Drive new membership: Conferences are an excellent opportunity for the association to attract new members and drive membership dues. The events showcase the benefits of association membership, such as access to resources, forming part of a community and discounts on industry products. Build community: Large-scale conferences are a perfect opportunity to offer your members the chance to network, build and nurture relationships, and feel like they are part of a community. #conferences #cvent #eventtech #checklist
