https://lnkd.in/eymH32tg What are alternative investments and why do they often lead to arbitration against the sellers? Alternative investments are simply an alternative to a traditional investment such as a stock or bond. 20 years ago most investors were sold traditional stocks by financial advisors in exchange for commission. These kinds of investments have come down dramatically. Now you can go to online brokerage firms and trade stocks for free. Wall Street has created a host of alternative investments that they sell the clients that, unfortunately, are actually very high risk and very high commission products that the brokers are pushing and selling because it drives a tremendous amount of profit for them.

Hot take: most aspiring angel investors are accepting of the illiquidity premium in private markets as long as clear expectations are set early on. A lot of the work today is going into how to make private markets more “investor friendly” for retail investors. I think this will be well-received, but based on the thousands of new angel investors I’ve onboarded over the last 3.5 years, it turns out most people understand that private markets are fundamentally different. Folks are willing to accept the illiquidity premium as long as you set clear expectations from the beginning so investors know what they’re getting into. And as a bonus, I’ve seen many such cases where too early selling would have caused investors to miss out on big gains in later years.
