And yet, much of this area has remained a mystery, unexplored and unmapped by modern techniques. 🔍✨ Our study "Data Synthesis and Advanced Predictive Modeling of Deep Coral and Hardbottom Habitats in the Southeast Atlantic" dives into better understanding sensitive benthic habitats like hardbottom substrates and coral communities 🏞️ We developed advanced predictive models to help delineate and characterize these hidden gems. 💎 These models, more efficient and cost-effective, can help BOEM and other users to develop better databases, reduce future field exploration costs by refining their areas of focus, and create comprehensive maps of these vital ecosystems. 📖 Read the research: https://lnkd.in/g2d_dkmP

We welcome abstracts for our session at the European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly 2025, taking place in Vienna, Austria, from 27 April to 2 May 2025. Co-hosted with Stockholms universitets Östersjöcentrum/Stockholm University Baltic Sea Centre, this session will focus on leveraging multitemporal earth observation data to better understand and monitor wetland ecosystems, essential yet fragile environments facing increasing challenges. For the past 12 months, I have been involved in a large collaborative effort contributing to one of the chapters for the 7th report on the State of Environmental Science in Svalbard - the #SESSreport. Our chapter, “Geology of Svalbard: Deep-time and Deep-Earth (SVALGEOL)” was led by Kim Senger. #SIOS will release the report on January 20th during the Polar Night Week 2025 conference. Can we see bogs 'breathe' from space? Answer: Yes. **updated video, with in-situ groundwater time series**. % Text from previous post: Our new paper in Remote Sensing of Environment demonstrates that data from radar satellites flying at 800 km above the Earth can be used to measure the ups (blue) and downs (red) of a raised peatland to mm-accuracy. The peat surface in the bog rises and falls annually, as the groundwater level changes from high in winter to low in summer. Since they are recharged entirely by rainfall, raised peatlands are highly sensitive to climate change. Our work implies that future impacts on near natural raised bogs or bogs under restoration can potentially be monitored at national scales by satellite radar. The paper is led by Alexis Hrysiewicz at UCD School of Earth Sciences and iCRAG - SFI Research Centre in Applied Geosciences and was written in collaboration with researchers at UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH) and staff at Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru / Natural Resources Wales. With ever more light in all areas of the world, also at the remotest places on Earth - in the middle of the ocean, artificial light is emitted into the environment. Be it oil platforms, vessels or fishing boats, lighthouses, harbors or cities - either by accident or on purpose, artificial light is sent through the sea surface towards an ecosystem which is based on the slow but consistent change of darkness and brightness, as everywhere else. While a lot of research had been done for land species and birds, research in the marine environment has still seeing less coverage. This is where GAME (Global Approach through Modular Experiments), an international project introduced by GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel together with several universities carries out research already in the 4th year. Two-person teams of students partner to find out what light does to marine species. This year, research is performed in the field of marine macroalgae. Before, the effects of light exposure was studied on snails, crabs and sea urchins, on mussels, and on benthic fouling communities. The Failure of the Commons is now touching on all global commons: oceans, atmosphere, biodiversity, Space, sweet water - yet only few authors expose this disaster. Science journalist Olive Heffernan is an exception, so please read her book: Exploitation of the high seas must end The high seas hide many sins, from modern-day slavery onboard fishing boats to a graveyard of decommissioned satellites. And more are looming, such as destructive deep-sea mining. In her new book, science journalist Olive Heffernan documents how a few powerful people are capitalizing on the absence of governance of the open oceans. Heffernan’s must-read text “takes even the most landlocked out to sea”, write reviewers and marine biologists Diva Amon and Juliano Palacios Abrantes. At the same time, as scientists from lower-income countries, they “wish that the book had avoided perpetuating one of the main issues plaguing discourse surrounding the high seas: a lack of representation and inclusion”. If the connection between environmental studies and space settlement seems a bit farfetched, biologist Cockell's fascinating, impassioned book could convert even the most skeptical. Written for the general reader, Cockell presents a logical and methodical argument (and many reinforcing examples) for merging the two disciplines, which he believes share the same objective: ""creating sustainable human communities in the cosmos-whether they are on the Earth or on any other planet."" Studying the earth's deserts or the hotspots in Yellowstone National park, for example, may assist us in the study of Mars, while ongoing space exploration has provided Earth with an extensive satellite network which can be used for discovering new oil fields in Saudi Arabia or identifying areas in Mongolia where snow has melted, allowing herds to graze. Chapters focus on the current crises we face, the practical and ethical dimensions of ""green living"" and ""greening the universe,"" and why mankind must tackle both tasks at once to ensure survival. In order to achieve success in ""exploring, settling and understanding the Universe,"" Cockell calls on government, industry and academia to take the lead in creating a ""systemic link between environmentalism and space exploration""; readers of this infectious volume will be hard pressed not to take up the cry.
