I help psychologists develop their best practise. Board approved supervisor. Passionate psychologist. Writer.
There are many reasons why you should be willing to pivot in therapy. Here's two that I think are underrated: 1. Trust You might hope that your client trusts you from the start. After all, you have good intentions. But it's worth remembering that many of our clients have been hurt by people who claimed to have good intentions. So you have to prove you can be trusted over many sessions. And as trust increases, so does the information you have to work with. You get let into aspects of your client's life that you never would have at the initial assessment. 2. Insight It takes time for insight to develop. When it does, it's common for that to change a client's goals. Insight can bring them into contact with what actually matters to them. This again is something that is unlikely to happen at the initial assessment. It's always worth remembering that our work improves when we are willing to change with our clients.
