Q: How did you first get involved in this profession and CRE development?
A: My first internship was with an acquisitions/property management company. I spent some days banging down doors (literally and figuratively) to collect rent from tenants and other building models to underwrite potential acquisitions. I have always had an entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to wear many hats at the same time, which is an ideal (and maybe the most important) skill set in real estate development.
Q: What is one piece of advice you’d offer someone looking to get into development and construction management today?
A: Surround yourself with the right team/mentors who will teach you (I have been very fortunate to have that with Warren Baker, Dan Slack, and Kevin Loftus, AIA) because very little about development can be learned in school as it is certainly an art, not a science. Figure out what your strengths are, understand your role within the team, and do it well.
Q: What is the best part of what you do?
A: Executing complex projects from start to finish with a smart, cohesive team to generate wins.
