Calder Capital Team Spotlight: Riley Hagen, Sell-Side Analyst Riley joined Calder Capital in January of 2024 following his internship with the firm in late 2023. Here’s some fun Q&A with Riley: What are your favorite activities? Anything outdoors. From hiking to snowboarding I enjoy spending my time outside when not in the office. Do you have a hidden talent? I can dunk a basketball. How did you come to work at Calder Capital? I knew about Calder from my time at Grand Valley, and at the time my past employer had a hiring freeze, which allowed me to pursue my passion in M&A. I got connected with the team, had a quick interview process, and the rest is history. What is your favorite memory from Calder? I don't have the plethora of memories that some members of the team may have, but so far one of the best memories was attending a Grand Rapids Griffen's game with the team. It was great to get out of the office with everybody for a moment. What motivates you to work hard each day? I really enjoy problem solving, and although some days can be long and stressful, the satisfaction that comes from this line of work is unmatched. I spent some days banging down doors (literally and figuratively) to collect rent from tenants and other building models to underwrite potential acquisitions. I have always had an entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to wear many hats at the same time, which is an ideal (and maybe the most important) skill set in real estate development.    Q:  What is one piece of advice you’d offer someone looking to get into development and construction management today?  A: Surround yourself with the right team/mentors who will teach you (I have been very fortunate to have that with Warren Baker, Dan Slack, and Kevin Loftus, AIA) because very little about development can be learned in school as it is certainly an art, not a science. Figure out what your strengths are, understand your role within the team, and do it well.   Q: What is the best part of what you do?  A: Executing complex projects from start to finish with a smart, cohesive team to generate wins.   #meettheteam #meetteambaker #team #expert
