Stonemont was honored to support Folds of Honor at the Northern Ohio Folds of Honor golf event last week. This event was attended by William I. (Zack) Markwell III and Matthew Bjorson from Stonemont, David Stecker from JLL and Jon Lenton from Wentz Financial Group. Folds of Honor is a fantastic organization that provides life-changing scholarships to spouses and children of America's fallen or disabled military, as well as first responders.

Memorial Day is fast approaching but what IS Memorial Day exactly? Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Memorial Day 2024 will occur on Monday, May 27. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. That is the "official" definition. To me Memorial Day is my great grandfather, my grandfather, my aunts and Uncles, my cousins, my neighbors across the street, my college buddies, my coworkers, and my friends. They all served. They all did something I wasn't prepared to do. They all had various reasons for doing so and those reason aren't important. They literally signed up to put themselves in harm's way with the clear understanding that they may have to lay down their lives in some far-off country. Why? Because at their very core they believed in what it is to be American. They knew that freedom, by any definition, is not a given and it certainly isn't free. So this weekend while you grill out or attend a concert or whatever, please if only for a moment remember what Memorial Day is really all about. Black veterans have played a significant role in shaping the trajectory of American history since the nation's inception. Their contributions have been profound and multifaceted, influencing military campaigns, civil rights movements, and societal progress. Understanding the historical numbers of Black soldiers provides a glimpse into the magnitude of their impact. The legacy of Black veterans continued to evolve throughout the 20th century after serving in both the American Revolutionary War and the Civil War. In World War I, over 350,000 Black soldiers served in segregated units, demonstrating valor and resilience in the face of adversity. During Black History Month, we honour the countless ways that Black Canadians have shaped our country’s culture and history. As a company that exists to hire and give back to Veterans and their families, we reflect on the many contributions of Black Canadians in our military history. Notably, the No. 2 Construction Battalion in 1916 was the first all-Black battalion, a result of two years of community advocacy. Despite facing discrimination, Black Canadians in WWII served courageously across military branches, earning medals for their bravery. Their efforts have been vital in making Canada the diverse nation we love. We also reflect on the critical importance of not only combatting blatant acts of racism and discrimination, but also the prevalence of deeply entrenched systemic racism. We join our fellow Canadians from all walks of life to advance racial equality in our workplaces, in our communities, and beyond.
