I am thrilled to announce the hiring of Katie Boord as Scenic Advisement’s first Chief Operating Officer. This marks a significant milestone in Scenic’s journey, and now feels like the right time to reflect on how we got here. Scenic, the merchant bank I co-founded with Michael Sobel in 2013, recently turned eleven. In those eleven years, I have posted on LinkedIn less than a handful of times. At Scenic Advisement, discretion is a core value (along with truth-telling and subject matter expertise). A decade ago, the secondary market for private companies was a wild west. Founders and investors needed advocates they could implicitly trust for the sale of their private company stock, honest brokers who prioritized integrity and best execution over all else. Scenic uniquely emerged to fulfill this need. By design, Scenic established itself quietly as the institutional standard-bearer in the private shares market. We hold closely the notion that it’s nobody’s business whose business we are doing. We don’t take out tombstones or issue press releases. Our good work leads founders and investors to find us (often by referral) and entrust us with all of their secondary needs. We have built a strong business with a world-class client list. We also see where the market continues to go today—fewer IPOs, less M&A activity, and a growing demand for liquidity. The need for our bespoke, high integrity services continues to grow. And we are leaning into this opportunity. As a first step in what we called our “adulting journey,” we engaged the advisory firm, Enjoy The Work (ETW), a team made up of accomplished senior operators and investors. Their mandate was clear—help us solve how Scenic can grow while remaining true to who we are. A key tactic toward this end was to expand our leadership team, specifically hiring our first Chief Operating Officer. We partnered with the executive search firm Guild Talent and ultimately found Katie Boord. Katie was most recently an SVP at Fanatics and before that spent 10 years as part of the early team at Twitter, both companies longtime friends of Scenic. Katie brings to the table deep strategic and operational know-how, along with a shared integrity. Katie is a rare talent and she’s already having a powerful impact on the team. To Katie, a very warm welcome. To all our friends and clients, a number of whom we’ve worked with for nearly two decades, we value you and thank you for being on this journey with us. It's amazing what shows up when you are open to stepping outside your comfort zone! Last night I was at a Session Meeting at my church, during which I have heard several members say, "I wasn't sure I could offer anything/I wasn't sure I was the right fit" when asked to chair a committee. Maybe it was the Property Committee, from which the building maintenance and repair is overseen, or the Finance Committee, from which the accounts and budgets are overseen, or in my case, it's the Personnel Committee, from which hiring/performance reviews/celebrations are overseen. Each of us individual session members questioned ourselves, when we were asked to chair the selected committee, whether it is a job that fits our talents and skills, and while we couldn't know the answer without stepping into the role, we thought we did. Don't we all do this? We assume from our comfort zone what works for or is a fit for us. And then we get stuck. Our comfort zone is not our friend. It is a safe space, but not one we blossum in. It is cozy but does not require our talents. So, stay there for long, and we develop apathy, boredom, restlessness, sarcasm, and even depression. When we step out of the comfort zone, this is when our value resurfaces - even if we first think we aren't ready, we are. We are always ready for a challenge. Always we are looking for another way to show up, to feel energized, to learn and to grow. Those members who are currently chairing the above committees, each made the choice to step out of their comfort zones, including me. And they and I have seen our minds shift, our talents show up and our appreciation for the role surface. Little did we know, in advance. These are the benefits of getting out of bed, of using a new route, of expanding our circle of influence, of trying something new and of gaining perspective. Open yourself to stepping outside your comfort zone and you will quickly feel the energy of life coursing through you! #attorneysatlaw #stepout

I’ve noticed something happening in our #strata space, and it’s encouraging… Young strata managers (well, let’s say, under 40?) are moving on from their roles - often with large, long-standing management companies - and setting up their own businesses, whether in strata management or trying something new in strata. When they speak to me, they’re saying things like: “Our values stopped aligning”  “That culture wasn’t the right fit for me anymore” “I know I have more to offer” "I want to try it THIS way" This is encouraging, because it means this next generation of strata professionals is ready to do better than the one before. And right now, a better way is sorely needed.    I’ve mentioned strata managers, but we’re seeing this in other strata service areas also. It has been happening in legal services for a while.
