This certainly was a tricky one to solve... ✔ Four new openings were required at the base of a slender 18m tall freestanding masonry chimney. ✔ The chimney had to be able to house an actual fire (no internal supports!). ✔ The chimney had to retain it's original aesthetic (no external supports either!). By breaking the problem down and solving from engineering first principles, we were able to develop an innovative post-tensioned masonry solution that ticked all of the above boxes. Well done Tom Roberts, Isaac Climpson, Graham Johnstone and the Stonewood Design team! 👏

Brickwork An in depth look at the beautifully constructed and detailed brickwork at our creamery project in Somerset. The brickwork is a combination of recycled local bricks and imperial-sized, handmade new bricks akin to that of the original building, and with similar bullnose details. The building’s landmark chimney was found to be structurally unstable, and had to be taken down brick-by-brick and rebuilt with a more stable internal structure. The engineering work involved in the reconstruction of the chimney was extremely unique owing to how rare it is for a chimney of this scale to be rebuilt in the UK. And to add more complexity, the base of the chimney has been designed to be open on all four sides.
