It is crucial to have a safe haven specifically designed to cater to the needs of male survivors. The demand for such a refuge may surprise many, as it is often overlooked that men also experience domestic violence. I would love to see this happening in Australia As well. By creating a men's domestic violence refuge in the future in Australia, we can address the scale of the problem and provide the necessary support to those affected. Additionally, this initiative may positively impact the high rates of male suicide in the country. It is essential to have open conversations with young boys and males who have experienced abuse to fully comprehend the magnitude of the issue.

“‘Alex House’, named after domestic abuse victim Alex O’Donoghue who took his own life in 2022, was opened officially by Alex’s parents on what was an incredibly emotional day. Current statistics show one third of all victims of domestic abuse are men, with one in six men suffering from domestic abuse at some point in their lifetime. Despite the prevalence of abuse, men are less likely to come forward for support or to tell anyone about their experiences. According to ManKind, two thirds of men who call their helpline have never told anyone else about the abuse they’ve experienced. “We’re so unbelievably proud to be opening this refuge, to provide support for men who often get forgotten in discussions on domestic abuse. Through Alex House, male victims will not only get specialist support for our incredible staff, but they’ll also be able to meet other men who have been through the same, who are beginning their journey to recovery, and who will make them feel a little less alone.” https://lnkd.in/epyVYnSM #domesticabuse

Just sharing here for anyone experiencing domestic abuse or domestic violence. The refuge website is an incredible resource for people from all backgrounds to make sense of what is happening to them. The definition of domestic abuse includes emotional abuse and verbal abuse - but it really comes down to a pattern of behavior that controls the partner (or ex-partner) by obtaining power over that person’s mental and physical autonomy. To make the first step to address abuse, we need to recognize it and understand what domestic abuse includes. We can then make steps to become safe, to create boundaries, to expunge all shame from our lives, and to live creatively, lovingly. The website says: What is domestic abuse? Domestic abuse (sometimes called ‘domestic violence’ or ‘intimate partner violence’) is an incident or a pattern of behaviour that is used by someone to control or obtain power over their partner or ex-partner. It is never the fault of the person who is experiencing it, and it is a crime. #domesticabuse #domesticviolence

Refuge's National Domestic Abuse Helpline has already supported more than 50,000 calls for help, with three-quarters of those being from survivors of domestic abuse. Many callers are “overwhelmed by the situation” their abuser has catapulted them into. Sometimes callers disclose they are self-harming, having suicidal thoughts, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, and eating disorders as a result of the domestic abuse. Read the full article on the topic below ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/eg4g4nRK If you require immediate protection, you can apply for an emergency non-molestation order, which means your ex-partner will not be notified that you are making this application. The harm caused by domestic abuse does not end when the relationship ends but can have a long-term impact, resulting in both physical and psychological symptoms including depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, digestive problems, headaches, insomnia and panic attacks. Many survivors suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Moreover, the abuse itself doesn’t always end when the relationship ends. In fact, the point of separation and the period just after is one of the most dangerous times for victims, many of whom will face a continuation or escalation of the abuse. Post-separation abuse is so common that controlling or coercive behaviour that takes place after the end of a relationship is now criminal offence. For women who have already fled the relationship, it can seem as though there is no escape for them at all. When someone does just enough to keep you from leaving - like apologising without change, or offering affection after abuse - it’s not love; it’s manipulation. The bare minimum can look like saying 'I’m sorry' without taking accountability or changing behaviour or giving you small acts of kindness to overshadow patterns of control, disrespect, or harm. This cycle often keeps people trapped, doubting their worth and hoping for change that doesn’t come. But here’s the truth: You deserve consistency. You deserve effort. You deserve love that feels safe and supportive. Recognising the bare minimum for what it is (a tactic to maintain control) is the first step towards setting healthier boundaries and demanding the respect you’re worthy of. 💡 If you’re struggling in your relationship, you’re not alone. Support is available: National Domestic Abuse Helpline: 0808 2000 247 Refuge UK: refuge.org.uk Men’s Advice Line: 0808 801 0327 You are worth more than the bare minimum. Victims of domestic abuse often endure unimaginable suffering because they fear the terrifying escalation of abuse that awaits them upon leaving. The post-separation increase in abusive tactics perpetuates a cycle of fear, disempowerment, and vulnerability, allowing perpetrators to maintain a tight grip of control over their victims. It is crucial they have the right support. Persistent harassment, repeated phone calls, text messages, emails, or showing up uninvited at the victim's home or workplace; stalking them both in person and online; threatening them with physical harm, harm to loved ones, or legal action; withholding financial support, manipulating assets, or refusing to comply with court-ordered financial arrangements; using the children as pawns; interfering with visitation rights, undermining the victim's parenting, or using the children to relay messages or threats; isolating the victim from their support network by spreading rumours, turning mutual friends and family against them, or by making false allegations to Children's Services, Cafcass or the police; engaging in gaslighting behaviour to make them doubt their own perceptions, memories, and sanity; using the legal system to harass them, or by refusing to comply with court orders which can be financially and emotionally draining for the victim; guilt-tripping the victim, playing the victim themselves, or using other emotional manipulation. #16daysofactivism

Christmas can be a challenging time for individuals experiencing domestic abuse. While it is often portrayed as a joyful season, the pressures of the holidays, such as financial strain, family gatherings, and heightened expectations, can exacerbate existing tensions in abusive relationships. Support services may be less accessible during the holiday season, and those in abusive situations might feel trapped due to social obligations or the inability to seek help. It's crucial for friends and family to be aware of the signs of domestic abuse and to offer support to those who may be struggling. If you or someone you know is in a difficult situation, reaching out to local shelters, hotlines, or support groups can be a vital step in finding safety and resources. It’s essential to prioritize safety and well-being, especially during a time that is meant to be about love and togetherness.
