2024 has become a turning point in the fight against #malaria. The very first malaria vaccines (RTS,S and R21) are being rolled out to children in sub-Saharan Africa, with the potential to save thousands of lives. "The vaccines — the first to target any human parasite — represent a feat of both scientific grit and fundraising ingenuity," writes STAT. In a special report, STAT highlights the 40-year quest to develop effective malaria vaccines and the researchers who made key breakthroughs possible. One of them is Ripley Ballou, IAVI's Chief Medical Officer, who previously helped lead the development of the RTS,S vaccine. #WorldMalariaDay & #WorldImmunizationWeek: Thanks to the dedicated work of scientists, researchers, public health leaders, and donors, we have entered a new era in the global fight to #EndMalaria. Late last year—following the World Health Organization’s recommendation that children in high-risk malaria settings should be given the RTS,S/AS01e #vaccine to curb infections from Plasmodium falciparum, the world’s deadliest malaria parasite—Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance approved a #malariavaccine program for endemic countries across Africa. These historic decisions mark the end of a decades-long journey to create a vaccine against this ancient killer. How did the vaccine come about, and are there lessons that could be applied to other vaccines in the future? #Introducing the Malaria Vaccine *Exiting news as #Liberia plans to implement the New Malaria vaccine into the EPI program. *Targets counties with moderate-to-high transmission of malaria. This is a game-changer in the fight against this deadly disease, coupled with other preventive measures. #How can national programs effectively introduce this new tool, ensuring the safety of children while maximizing its impact? This guide provides a roadmap, drawing on lessons learned from pilot programs: #Decision-making: -Assess malaria burden and local transmission. -Engage key stakeholders (immunization, malaria, maternal health). -Establish a technical working group for coordination, including AEFI experts. -Seek expert advice from National Immunization Technical Advisory Groups. -Prioritize areas for rollout based on need, resource constraints, and AEFI monitoring capacity. #Planning: -Integrate malaria vaccine into national immunization and malaria strategies, including robust AEFI plans. -Develop training materials for healthcare workers on safe administration, monitoring, and AEFI reporting. -Ensure adequate cold chain capacity and vaccine safety. -Plan for demand promotion, communication, and addressing vaccine hesitancy. #Implementation: -Train healthcare workers on safe administration, monitoring, and AEFI reporting procedures. -Mobilize communities and address vaccine hesitancy, emphasizing safety measures. -Integrate with other child health services, ensuring smooth reporting of AEFI. -Monitor coverage and safety closely, with active and passive surveillance systems for AEFI. #Monitoring and Evaluation: -Track vaccine coverage, impact on malaria burden, and AEFI. -Analyze AEFI data, identify patterns, and take corrective action if needed. -Regularly evaluate and improve AEFI Monitoring systems for continuous improvement. -Remember, collaboration between immunization and malaria programs, is crucial for the safe and successful introduction of this important tool. #malariavaccine #publichealth #childhealth #globalhealth #prevention #AEFImonitoring #WHO #TGF #Gavi #UNICEF https://lnkd.in/eiYM2n6Q.

The first two malaria vaccines will be distributed to twelve African countries – Belgium at the center stage in this public health advance • The first Malaria vaccine to be EMA approved, Mosquirix, was developed in Belgium where it is also produced • In 2021 the GSK vaccine became the first to have been endorsed by WHO for broad use, among c.140 other vaccines in development, highlighting Belgium's positive impact in the public health fight against Malaria • R21 became the second Malaria vaccine with WHO endorsement in 2023. It shows an ever higher efficacy than Mosquirix, reaching the WHO efficacy goal of >75% • Malaria currently remains one of Africa’s deadliest diseases, killing nearly half a million children under the age of 5 each year • Annual global demand for malaria vaccines is expected to reach 40–60 million doses by 2026, growing to 80–100 million doses by 2030 Roland Berger Belgium happily supports local and international Health players to navigate their most critical challenges. A seismic event in global health took place in Cameroon last week: the first #WHO-approved malaria vaccine was administered to children there. The vaccines provide one more vital tool in our fight against malaria and Cameroon kicks off a pan-African mobilization that is expected reach more than 20 counties in the coming year, with Burkina Faso next in line to begin administering shots. This historic moment is a testament to the work that #Gavi and countless other organizations and governments are undertaking to protect children in #emergingmarkets from vaccine-preventable diseases. It's also a reflection of the pioneering research that biopharma companies like #GSK, #Merck, Serum Vaccine Institute, #johnsonandjohnson and many others are conducting to fight dangerous pathogens. As I write in the post below, triumphs like the deployment of the new malaria vaccine and other public health achievements create a pathway for emerging markets to embrace their full economic potential. Now is the time to continue investing in these essential programs. I Recently attended a UniAthena webinar on "Target Zero Malaria: Roadblocks & Strategies" by Dr Omagha Rachel and it was wonderful to learn and share in steps to eradicating the disease. Malaria is treatable and manageable with interventions such as insecticide-treated mosquito nets, insecticide residual spraying in endemic areas, and of course vaccinations. Vaccination stigmas are still a very dire crisis in rural developing settings where people have linked medical interventions to allegations such as impotence or government propaganda. Malaria vaccines reduce symptomatic cases of malaria by 75% during the 12 months following a 3-dose series. How then, are we going to engage and encourage people in rural and low income areas where incidence and prevalence rates are high to vaccinate? - Entertainment; Stories, sketches, songs, etc. this has proven to be a very effective way of conveying information. - Encourage those who have recovered from or experienced the effects of malaria to speak up. Nothing is more encouraging than a testimony. - Identify those that hold influence in the community. These include the headman, chiefs/chieftenesses, and even the village gossip(swift mode of information transfer 😂). Educating said individuals on the prevention and treatment of malaria is vital as their word tends to holds more weight than any health professional in this setting because they have something we don’t have, trust and influence. One the elements of WHO’s "Global Technical Strategy for malaria 2016–2030" is to see malaria eliminated in at least 30 countries by 2030. Cape Verde has recently lead by example how possible this is👌🏾

In 2022, over 608,000 people were killed by malaria, 78% of which were children under the age of five. The development of the new cost-effective R21/Matrix-M malaria vaccine, which was recommended by the World Health Organization after it was found to be effective in 70-80% of cases, could completely change the course of malaria driven deaths, saving 450,000 lives per year. It’s critical that this vaccine receive swift prequalifications so we can help prevent millions of cases of malaria and save hundreds of thousands of lives. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/ek2aVDmA
