Why fundraising through challenge events like the London Marathon is so important for charities
I get it: when you’re forever being asked to sponsor someone for a challenge to raise money for their chosen charity, it can become tiresome, especially when you might be wondering ‘what difference will my donation really make?’ Well, the specifics of whichever charity you’re giving to aside, I’m here to explain one overarching reason that your contribution DOES make a difference, whoever you’re donating to.
In the world of charity fundraising, we operate on two planes: restricted income (‘UI’) and unrestricted income (‘RI’). Often, a substantial proportion of funds raised are RI: the organisation may have been specifically contracted to deliver a particular service with set objectives and performance targets, or a philanthropic donation may have been given on the condition that the money be spent on a particular project or service. Whilst RI is crucial (it forms the bulk of income for many charities; we couldn’t operate without it!), UI – which is rarer – can be used in the way the charity sees fit to deliver maximum impact, and is thus seen as gold in the world of fundraising.
For an organisation like The Children’s Society, UI will be vital in achieving our ambitious goal to overturn the damaging decline in children & young people’s wellbeing by 2030. UI allows the charity to invest in the work we know will have the biggest impact, most notably growing our pioneering offer of open-access wellbeing hubs for young people.
It takes a whole range of income streams to make a charity run well, but without UI we simply cannot do our best work. The donations you make to anybody’s fundraising pages contribute directly to that, so you can be assured your money will make a splash, even if it does just feel like a drop in the ocean.
In case you didn’t know, I’m taking on a whole range of endurance challenges this year to raise money for The Children’s Society – and the London Marathon is just the start!
Please donate if you can, and share this post so more people get to know the impact they make by sponsoring friends, family and colleagues for charity events!
