Black Box Project families temporarily loan us their loved ones' digital devices, such as smartphones and tablets, for our team of forensic experts to examine the data. This insight is harnessed to gain better insight into crisis situations, which Stop Soldier Suicide then implements into suicide-specific care.

The Veterans Justice Commission is a 15-member commission launched by the Council on Criminal Justice in August 2022 to examine the extent and nature of veterans' involvement in the criminal justice system and develop recommendations for policy changes to enhance safety, health, and justice for veterans.[1] The Commission, chaired by former U.S. Defense Secretaries Chuck Hagel and Leon Panetta, is assessing risk factors that drive veterans' justice system involvement, the adequacy of transitional assistance as service members reenter civilian life, and the effectiveness of the justice system's response when veterans break the law.[1] In its first set of recommendations, the Commission identified ways to better support veterans at the "front end" of the justice system, from arrest through sentencing, such as improving identification of veteran status and coordination to connect them with services and diversion programs.[4] In its second set of recommendations released in February 2024, the Commission called for the Department of Defense to create a lead transition office, adopt evidence-based interventions for at-risk service members, and expand access to VA health benefits to cut the number of justice-involved veterans.
