We had the honour of welcoming EU Commissioner Raffaele Fitto to Stora Enso’s Helsinki office. His visit provided a fantastic opportunity to discuss the critical role the forest-based bioeconomy plays in driving sustainable growth and fostering regional jobs and development across Europe. At Stora Enso, our roots are deeply embedded in the regions. While our headquarters are in Helsinki, our operations—and our industry as a whole—are firmly anchored in rural areas, where forests grow and communities thrive. Forests are the foundation of our business, and we’re proud to contribute to rural employment while advancing Europe’s green transition. With innovations like renewable wood-based construction materials, fossil-free packaging solutions, and lignin-based alternatives for batteries and adhesives, we are proving that sustainable solutions can drive both environmental progress and economic resilience. The bioeconomy is already a major force, employing 5 million Europeans today, with immense untapped potential for growth. As Commissioner Fitto leads the EU’s regional development efforts, we shared our strong belief that the bioeconomy can be a cornerstone of Europe’s circular and resilient future—one that reduces fossil dependence, strengthens local communities, jobs and ensures strategic autonomy. We thank Commissioner Fitto for his visit. Together, we can help Europe move toward a greener, more circular economy that benefits both people and the planet. #CircularBioeconomy #RenewableMaterials #SustainableForestManagement #EU #EuropeanInnovation Mette Kahlin McVeigh Antto Kauhanen

Last night, I overheard a discussion at Tivoli Food Market in Copenhagen. A group at the next table was debating whether Denmark, being such a small country, should even bother going green. The argument? Our impact is tiny compared to the big players. I disagree. What we do matters. But they also had a strong point: If we want to make a real difference, our solutions must scale. Denmark has a history of innovation—think wind energy, district heating, and cycling infrastructure. But the real power comes when these solutions are designed for global adoption. It’s not just about what works for Denmark; it’s about creating models that the rest of the world can use. The green transition isn’t just a national effort—it’s a global one. And if we, as a small country, focus on scalable solutions, we can have an outsized impact. What do you think? How can small countries best contribute to global sustainability? #Sustainability #ScalableSolutions #GreenTransition

GREEN KNOWLEDGE, BEST SEEDS FOR THE FUTURE Two weeks ago, the Valencian Community suffered one of the most tragic days of recent years with the flash floods. The core principles of prevention, proactiveness and coordination has been critical under these tragic circumstances, where every minute matters. Life goes on, and this week we welcomed a group of chinese executives from ADBC, as speakers. Congrats Marta García de Alcaraz from KNOHAO LTD., LLC for managing a trully compelling #GreenAgenda: BIOCOMERCIO, Climate-KIC, Caixa Popular, Comité de Agricultura Ecológica Comunitat Valenciana, Fundación de Estudios Bursátiles y Financieros, Fundación Cajamar. In my case, it was a big pleasure speaking about the Valencian Community as a financial centre, its importance for Valencian-based global private banks and about sustainable finance instruments for european SMEs. Sustainable finance has a key role to play in delivering on the policy objectives under the European green deal as well as the EU’s international commitments on climate and sustainability objectives. It does this by channelling private investment into the transition to a climate-neutral, climate-resilient, resource-efficient and fair economy, as a complement to public money. The European Union strongly supports the transition to a low-carbon, more resource-efficient and sustainable economy and has been at the forefront of efforts to build a financial system that supports sustainable growth. Now that I´ve time to catch my breath, it seems like a great idea gathering European and Asian financial professionals for networking. All together starting to get ahead about sustainable finance and best organic farming. My grandfather used to say that once in your life you need a doctor, a lawyer, a policeman and a preacher but every day, three times a day, you need a farmer. Organic farming respects the world and prepare us for the best future. #Asia #EuropeanUnion #Export #Organicfarming #Sustainablefinance

What is the potential of the Nordic region to be a lead market for sustainable innovation? We will be taking a closer look at this question in a new project.
🍾 I'm super excited to hear our NORDLEAD project received funding from Business Finland. 🗺 Starting this autumn, we will study the potential and means of developing Nordic-level lead markets for sustainable innovations, looking into sectors like smart energy systems, maritime transportation, and sustainable and circular textiles. More info to follow after summer. I'm really happy to work on this topic for the next couple of years with Ville Valovirta, Pauli Komonen and others.
