🌏 Opening the LeadWomen APAC DEI Summit 2024 with a Vision for "Humanity Rebalanced" 🌏 Our first panel, "DEI Thought Leadership – Asian Context," was a thought-provoking deep dive into the ways Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion must be reimagined to reflect Asia’s cultural and organisational landscapes. Under the expert guidance of moderator Anne Abraham, distinguished speakers Ruslan Islahudin (PETRONAS), Mahuran Saro Sariki (TalentCorp), Kay Luan TAY (FIDE Forum), and Jukhee Hong (ASEAN-BAC Malaysia) explored the unique opportunities and challenges of adapting global DEI frameworks to our region. The discussion emphasised the need for a region-specific approach: one that respects cultural hierarchies and family-oriented values while ensuring diverse perspectives are included in every boardroom. Key themes included Malaysia’s ongoing DEI progress, the crucial role of governance in fostering inclusive leadership, and positioning DEI not merely as an organisational asset but as a national priority. Levelling the playing field. In our role at INCLUDE Consulting a key part of my work involves supporting organisations in building and developing gender-diverse leadership teams. When organisations first approach us, many tell us that they have tried various interventions to increase female representation at the leadership level, such as mentorship, maternity benefits, flexible policy, and training. Yet, when measuring the results, there is a clear gap. While there is a huge amount of activities and inputs, the outputs and impact are minimal. The Global Gender Report that the World Economic Forum published this week further supports this. The number of women in leadership in Singapore has dropped to just ⬇️ 26%, and the number of female CEOs to just ⬇️ 12.5%. Left unresolved, teams become less diverse, and the rate of innovation declines, affecting financial performance. This is where our team at INCLUDE has made a huge difference by supporting organisations to narrow the gender gap and address systemic challenges through our Sponsorship program. One that does not try to “fix” women or get them to act differently but rather supports them with the tools and skills to navigate the biases they face in the workplace. The focus is not just on high-potential women. To shift the needle, we also need to include men and influential leaders in conversations. Through the program, we work closely with leaders to be active sponsors of high-potential women, which is a huge propeller of success. Above all, the results speak for themselves. Last Friday, the Batenborch International Belgium team had the privilege of hosting 20 ‘Leading Ladies’ for a Roundtable, facilitated by the extraordinary Marion Debruyne (she/her), Dean of Vlerick Business School. What an inspiring conversation 🙌! While we all agreed that gender should never define the quality or authenticity of leadership, with only 5% of CEO roles in Belgium held by women, the road to achieving a more balanced representation is long. We're optimistic that, with continued collaboration, we can make that change ✔️ . For young women with big ambitions, I highly recommend the book “Making Your Way”—it offers great perspective on each decision and step along the road to leadership (thanks for passing it on, Patrick De Greve 🧩). Connecting with peers, sharing experiences, and learning from each other’s highs and lows is invaluable 🎯 . It’s a reminder that no one should walk this journey alone—and having the right network can make all the difference 😊. It took a few bubbles to process the insights shared 🥂 - but we also had bubbles to celebrate the growth of our community 💫 ! Let’s keep pushing forward and use that edge to grow the sparkling community of female CEOs.
