Rotorua is a city in New Zealand's North Island, known for its hot springs and bubbling mud pools. Diadem was approached to create a wayfinding strategy that would help foster community connection and enrich visitor experiences. Elevating Te Arawa's living culture drove the strategy's focus, along with using timber as the material of choice. This aligned with the local council's Wood First Policy and the forestry industry, one of Rotorua's largest employers. Diadem's carbon modelling showed wood was superior to standard aluminium, with a 45% reduction in embodied carbon. Stora Enso’s impressive new head office, called Katajanokan Laituri, reflects sustainable forestry practices. It is a prime example of what a tree can do and what we can achieve with sustainable forest management: a marvel of wooden architecture where modern, urban work life meets nature, well-being, and the renewability of the forest. Back in the 14th century it was born out of necessity rather than sustainable the Japanese traditional forestry called Daisugi, which ingeniously addresses the challenge of wood production without depleting trees. The technique is a clever approach to grow more wood in less areas. Originating in the Kitayama region, where saplings were scarce, this technique involves nurturing cedars in a unique manner. Instead of felling trees, cedars are carefully pruned to encourage the growth of straight, knot-free shoots. Hand-pruning every two years ensures that only the top branches remain, promoting optimal growth. After 20 years, these cultivated shoots are ready for harvesting, with mature "tree stock" yielding up to a hundred shoots simultaneously. While scarcity of saplings initially drove the development of Daisugi, another catalyst emerged: the rise of sukiya-zukuri architecture in the 14th century. This architectural style, favored by samurai and nobility, created a surge in demand for high-quality wood. Daisugi emerged as a solution to meet this demand efficiently. Beyond its practicality, Daisugi wood boasts exceptional qualities. It surpasses standard cedar in flexibility by 140% and in density and strength by 200%. Most importantly, it exhibits remarkable durability, ensuring sustainably and longevity in various applications. Forest to Frame: Why Portland’s Airport is a New Milestone for Mass Timber by Brian Libby Beneath the nine-acre prefab wood roof and dozens of skylights, the new PDX’s tree-lined terminal designed by ZGF Architects is a marvel of material sourcing and construction. Inspired by farm-to-table cuisine, ZGF and its consultant, Sustainable Northwest Wood Inc, created a “forest to frame” approach. Wood was sourced from landowners and mills within a 300-mile radius of the airport, is either Forest Stewardship Council-certified or traceable to forests or landowners meeting equally forest-friendly practices. The team also prioritized sourcing wood from smaller mills, family forests, non-profits, and tribal nations.  “To me it’s a beautiful love story, of what happens when people and the land come together,” Anne Niblett of the Coquille Indian Tribe, whose forest in southwestern Oregon provided wood for the roof’s glulam beams, said at the terminal’s opening dedication. This is not how the timber market normally works. When ZGF began the project, “You couldn’t answer how much wood came from, say, fire-resilience harvesting, or from small family-run forests doing good forestry,” recalls ZGF associate principal Jacob Dunn. Instead, “Forests get logged. The longs go into piles, go through a mill and they get turned into products. They’re not segregated by forest origin or landowner type. Monocultures provide high productivity, i.e. allow rapid restoration of forest areas and production of wood and other resources (e.g. copper) in a short time. This is especially important in conditions of high demographic pressure and need for building materials. Advantage No. 2. Easier management of forests: fight against diseases and enemies, reduction of chemical treatments, which leads to a reduction of environmental pollution. Advantage No. 3. Combating carbon emissions due to rapid growth and efficient absorption of carbon dioxide. Benefit No. 4. Restoration of degraded lands and creation of new ecosystems. It is also important to note that with a reasonable approach and adherence to the principles of sustainable management, even monocultures can harmoniously fit into the natural landscape. The project started a month ago by announcing the start of financing for its implementation.
