🐶 ❤️ 😺 A group of Chicago Office Storckies spent part of their afternoon volunteering at the Anti-Cruelty location just down the street from our office. In a joint effort between our Fun Committee and Diversity, Equity, and Belonging Committee -- we learned about their amazing mission and work with animals and the Chicago community + got to play with some adorable cats, dogs, and other animals! 🐶 ❤️ 😺! Thank you Heidi for leading this effort and here's to more time supporting this amazing group (and maybe convincing HR for animals in the office... 😉) https://lnkd.in/grrCUB36

Executive Director, Social Movement Strategist, Author & Speaker ✷ I Drive Justice-oriented Organizational Transformation
Howdy all! I'm very excited share that I've taken on the role of Executive Director of WildEarth Gaurdians! Thrilled to be joining this community of hard-charging and passionate advocates for people and the planet. I believe that Guardians stands as a beacon of hope and action in the realm of conservation. Guardians is unapologetic and uncompromising in its defense of the West’s majestic landscapes, magnificent wildlife, fragile climate, and dynamic river systems. For many years I have admired its bold systems-change approach to championing innovative environmental policies driven by grassroots engagement, and cutting-edge use of legal tools to hold decision-makers accountable. Guardians does what others say “can’t” be done, and that’s the same cloth from which I’m cut—challenging the status quo, strategically going after what the planet and people really need, and steering clear of false solutions. In other words, Guardians like to kick ass and so do I! We are thrilled to introduce Hop Hopkins as WildEarth Guardians’ new Executive Director! After an exhaustive national search, the board and staff of WildEarth Guardians unanimously chose Hop to lead the organization. Hop was born in Texas, has lived across the West, and has been organizing for over 25 years at the intersections of race, class, gender, and the environment. We put some questions to Hop for him to introduce himself– take a look. We’re so excited to welcome Hop to Guardians, and we think you will be too! Human beings pride themselves on being social animals. But are we really living up to that title? We live in concrete houses, draped in clothes, and relentlessly exploit nature in the name of prosperity. Does this make us social animals, or is it just a term we use to appease our egos? What does it mean to be social? Shouldn't it involve empathy, equality, and love? If we can't live harmoniously with these values, are we any different from other animal species? Being truly social means more than just coexisting. It means caring for each other, protecting our environment, and fostering a community where everyone thrives with equal opportunities in every aspect of life. Let’s question our actions and redefine what it means to be a social being. Are we truly social, or just pretending? #SocialAnimals #Empathy #Equality #Love #Community #SelfReflection #ExploreInside #HumanNature #RedefineHumanity

What insights can Buddhism offer in the wake of our current environmental crisis? At Georgetown, theology courses are a part of our core curriculum. I’ve chosen to apply what I’ve learned about Buddhism to conservation by examining how Buddhist ethics on animal rights could be applied to biodiversity conservation in the Amazon. My article, "Examining Modern Wildlife and Environmental Destruction Through the Lens of Buddhism", can be found in Georgetown’s journal Utraque Unum:

In the opening foreword of The Solutionary Way, Dr. Jane Goodall writes, "I am convinced that we must address the critical issues that this book highlights, such as the need for humane and environmentally responsible production of food, voting rights for all, and alternatives to animal testing for biomedical and other forms of research. There are dire problems facing us in all these areas and many more, but despite the challenges, we must not lose hope. That is why the message in The Solutionary Way is so important." A better world is possible! Last month More Than Equal’s chief executive, Ali Donnelly, posted a blog that shared her observations having completed a year in the job. She wrote that motor racing is “a sport where people and stakeholders are reluctant to point some of the challenges out. No sport makes itself a better place for women and girls without going through a process of being honest about its shortcomings. We need people prepared to be a bit more honest here, or progress will not just be slow but glacial”. (From Own Slot's article in The Times) I love this insight from Alison Donnelly, sadly because it's a situation we see all to often, not just in sport, but across business and even education. We are privileged at The Well HQ to be invited to do the deeper work, to understand how well environments and cultures acknowledge, understand and support women and girls. Not just the optics of it, but the reality. And during this process we often find huge disparity between what people think is happening, and what is really happening. Between what leadership believe their people feel, and what it actually feels like to be a woman in their organisation. Between the opportunity for everyone to fulfil potential and the perception of that opportunity by certain groups. Often, it's this lack of awareness about the inequitable nature of an organisations physical, professional and pyscho-social environment, but worse when it is a lack of desire to even reflect on it. A lack of desire to honestly reflect on the deeply held attitudes, beliefs and traditions that exist, and how they might be harmful to equality, equity, diversity and inclusion. And that's exactly what's been happening. And it's why, a decade after I started work to address inequalities in sport for women, we are still having the same conversations, and seeing the same challenges. However, amongst what seems like a glacial pace of change are the trailblazers. And what we have now learned from the likes of our work with The Football Association, England Netball, and Ali's organisation More than Equal, to name but a few, and the way we, and they, have shaped reflective, insight led, female centred, strategic and systematic approaches, means that we have a road map on which we can accelerate the rate of change. And that's exciting. #womeninsport #empowerwomen #femaleathletehealth #misogynyinsport #equality #trailblazers Owen Slot: Misogyny and omertà – women in F1 reveal sport’s dark truth to me (thetimes.co.uk)

June might be over, but let’s talk about Pride Month, National Indigenous History Month, Housing and Pets. 📝🪶🌈🐕🐈 There is a long history of the human-animal bond for Indigenous Peoples. And the human-animal bond creates a safe space for 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals. But how is this relevant to housing? And why are we talking about it? Learn why with our latest blog linked below. ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/gPQXaESY
