How could Levis lose $26m because of water? A new report explains how water-related disruptions can hit the P&L and have a huge impact on the bottom line. Here’s the clincher: “A typical apparel brand with a 55% gross margin and 15% EBIT margin could see a 3% decrease in operating profit from just a 1% increase in the cost of goods sold due to water-related disruptions.” I did some napkin math. Based on their 2023 annual reports, here’s how much some big apparel brands could lose based on just ONE major water disruption: Hanes: $37m Levis: $26m Ralph Lauren: $22m The real kicker is that only 1 out of 10 apparel companies disclose this risk. As momentum builds with #circularfashion and overall calls for #sustainability against #fastfashion... I feel compelled to share the experience I just had. I received a phone call this week from a client asking if he could swing by the shop to replace some collars and cuffs on shirts we had made for him, I told him sure, to stop in. Client came in on Friday, the shirts were from 1996!!! And they were in relatively great shape, save for some yellowing on his white collars and cuffs, and the fact that he gained a half inch in his neck size... Overall, not bad for 28 year old shirts! There's a lot to be said here about well-made clothes and proper laundering, and reducing your impact on the future. There's a saying I've heard, something to the effect of "the sting of expensive, is short lived compared to the burn of cheap"...There is nothing like buying quality. In this day and age of immediate gratification and need, need, need...you get what you pay for, and often times, cheap has lasting effects in all the wrong ways. The #textile industry is the 2nd largest contributor to #globalwarming, buy responsibly, #manufacture with #integrity and source #ethically...
