A new frontier ‼️ The offshore wind is one of most promising renewables ⚡️ source and with a lot of potential. The floating turbines represents an important step to exploit such potential as moving into deep waters not only implies to have much more possibilities for sites, but also improve capacity factors and allows projects also in seas that have high depths already close to shore. Offshore Wind and Hydrogen | Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, 2024 Projects intended to help green hydrogen sector Although the province continues to pursue onshore wind projects to help meet its greenhouse gas reduction targets and increase the use of renewable energy sources, Tuesday's announcement is aimed squarely at what the premier described as "a race against the world" to develop a green hydrogen industry. Wind turbines create electricity which is lost if it cannot be added to an energy reservoir. That's why proponents of green hydrogen support using offshore electricity to create hydrogen gas which can be stored, transported and then converted back into electricity using fuel cells or hydrogen-driven turbines. Almost all island communities depend on fossil fuel imports from the mainland territory. These fuel imports are the lifeline of the island. However, transportation costs make these imports expensive, and delays can put the island at risk of blackouts. To reduce reliance on costly energy imports and decrease the carbon footprint, decentralized power generation and microgrids are essential. Tidal kite is an emerging decentralized power generation technology that harnesses underwater tidal and ocean currents to provide power at a relatively high-capacity factor of up to 46%. In February 2024, Minesto, a Swedish technology pioneer connected the world's first commercial tidal kite rated at 1.2 MW to the grid in Faroe Island. The company has plans to build four arrays in the Faroe Islands, totaling 120 MW, which would supply 40% of the island’s power demand. Expect to see creative solutions for uses of offshore wind power from the Gulf of Mexico. Along the Atlantic coast, electricity from offshore wind is injected into the grid, which is made possible by state governments' involvement with at least one of their aims being the replacement of carbon-based fuels. The same approach might be used in the Gulf of Mexico, but more likely, creative uses of the power will be developed. I don't know what they will be, but hydrogen/ammonia is being discussed. What about wave, tidal, biomas gasification, geothermal, hydropower, biofuel from algae ? If we have a power source producing almost continuously, this could limit this transmission issue. That’s what we are proposing at Hace wave energy where only 5 cm of wave is enough to start producing electricity.
