A must, data quality control before modelling contaminated soil and groundwater. When you are modeling, in an ideal world, all data is ready and properly formatted for use. But this is rarely the case. You will spend most of your time organizing and performing quality control on the data, and trying to understand the reports and what was done by the environmental engineering contractor. Remember that we often work under pressure, rushing through procedures, and delivering reports as quickly as possible. It happens to all of us, and under these circumstances, it is normal to make errors, from typos to incorrect maps. When reviewing a report, we will focus on the obvious errors, but most likely, we will not delve into the data tables. You assume they have been reviewed and are correct. Unless you work with the data and try to load it into proper software (even the simplest one), it will be very hard to spot these errors. It is a time-consuming process but doing it manually (better than using an automated process) and comparing with other sources of information such as public databases, you will soon realize where the problems are. Examples of typical errors: wrong coordinates of piezometers or spatial data (especially if using GPS in a facility with metallic roofs), wrong geographic datum, depth of soil samples, lithologies or piezometric levels not consistent with the well depth, mislabeling of samples or piezometers, missing data, elevation data not consistent with topographic information, lithology descriptions not consistent with core pictures (one should be wrong!). And believe it or not, these mistakes are copy-pasted from report to report and can be tracked back over the years. Make a thorough review of these inconsistencies before blaming the report; sometimes the error is in other data you are using. Be critical but not biased. It is worth mentioning that contractors do a great job handling the chemical analysis data. Although I usually review and compare the tables in the report with the lab analysis certificates randomly, I have not found a single error. In the end, you may be able to live with all these details if your objective is just to decide if there is contamination or not. But when there is contamination and your goal is to define distribution, volumes, and estimate remediation costs, all these details matter.

Fascinating Trip to Zeal Environmental Technologies! #ChemicalEngineering #WasteManagement Last week, I visited Zeal Environmental Technologies and gained valuable insights into industrial waste management! Here's what resonated with my chemical engineering background: Importance of Waste Segregation: Proper separation of waste streams is crucial for effective treatment. Chemical engineers design processes to segregate waste based on properties, allowing for targeted treatment methods. Understanding Treatment Technologies: Zeal utilizes incineration and Oily Waste Water Treatment Plants (OWWTPs) - chemical engineering principles are key in these unit operations, like combustion, separation, and mass transfer, for safe and efficient waste treatment. Environmental Compliance in Action: Their adherence to MARPOL 73/78 regulations highlights the importance of environmental compliance in our field. Chemical engineers ensure processes meet these standards to minimize environmental impact. This trip solidified the importance of chemical engineering in sustainable waste management! Waste segregation, treatment selection, and safe handling all rely on our expertise. What are your thoughts on the role of chemical engineering in waste management?
