🌏 We announced Expo Atlas on stage at AppJS Conf. For those of you who missed it here's a live demo of Atlas from Evan Bacon. Atlas gives you a live source map explorer of your Bundle where you can click on a file and see why it was imported, which is incredible because usually when you have a source map explorer, you just see that it's in there and then you have to hunt through your code to figure out why something was included. In Atlas you can also see how code is treated when it's actually converted, which is really nice because if you're new to Expo this really peels back the curtains. If you're trying to learn about how React works behind the scenes with Babel, Atlas is a great tool to do that. https://lnkd.in/gG7_8n5b

If you're a new maintainer, want to be a maintainer, or have been for awhile - come join my talk at Contribfest as I talk about the past year of me stumbling through becoming a lead maintainer of a project. I'll go over things I sucked at, and the few things I actually did well. And if you want to BECOME a maintainer, well, do I have the project for you - at Porter's Contribfest slot after my talk we will be working together to revamp the roadmap for Porter to bring on the next wave of contributors and maintainers. :) https://sched.co/1Yheh

KubeCon attendees, be sure to sign up for Christian Hüning's lighting talk: Rust-Based Magic: Streamlined and Secure 🦀 Read about Rust, and you hear claims that seem too good to be true: memory safety, zero-cost abstractions, blazing speed…all at the same time? Back in 2018, the Linkerd project chose Rust for its data plane, betting that the language really would deliver the kind of speed and security that handling user data required. In 2021, they brought Rust to the control plane, betting that projects like kube-rs and kubert had matured enough to get the same kinds of wins in Kubernetes controllers. Join us for a whirlwind tour of how those bets have paid off for the service mesh, how great it is not to worry about null pointers and memory stomps, and why more and more projects are adopting Rust. #servicemesh #cloudnative #opensource #linkerd

The best thing I watched this week was Steve Sanderson NDC Keynote "Where Web Tech is Going Now" "Disruptive new features that are showing up across technologies and changing how web apps are built. This is a technical, demo-centric, and occasionally advanced talk, digging into live code examples in Next.js (React), SvelteKit, Blazor, Astro, and more. " Steve walks us through how web development has changed from the 1990s until today, and how some of the big ideas using the web platform are starting to converge. Central concepts, like (streaming) server side rendering, enhanced navigation, and islands of interactivity, are demonstrated using different modern web frameworks. The talk also dives into the latest iteration of WebAssembly and WASI, which some hope will finally bring "seamless interop across all languages, operating systems, and CPU architectures". The modern web sure is an exciting journey to be going on! https://lnkd.in/dN9s-CZe

To get geo from IP, we got ourselves Maxmind db and created an API endpoint. This worked well so far, but yeah, always caused an extra call. Then I found that Vercel has `X-Vercel-IP-Country` header. This saves me an extra API call to render the relevant geo based cards on spendcrypto.io for server-side rendering. Nice little perk of hosting on Vercel.

Is open source necessary if you need to build an ecosystem? This week on The Business of Open Source, I talked with Ashraf Samhouri, CEO of Activepieces (YC S22) about ecosystem building and creating open source products when a major user group are non-technical people.
