Though the new year is underway in full steam, it's good to sometimes look back. 😊 Just as our partners did in Bulgaria and Romania, PRI ended the year in important discussions with Irish #childjustice stakeholders on how lessons from #internationalstandards and our #research into current practices across #detention facilities in Europe can help realise better data collection on and monitoring of violence against imprisoned children. More steps in 2024... #DataMOSAIC #Safeguarding #Childrensrights
Under the #DataMosaic project, we are making significant strides in #safeguarding imprisoned children in Europe. Through working sessions held in Bulgaria, Ireland, and Romania, key stakeholders including #childjustice experts, #prisonstaff and civil society representatives came together with PRI, SAPI (sapibg.org/en) and Terre des hommes - Romania to discuss and address challenges in current data collection on violence against children (#VAC) in #detention. 🔗 Learn more: https://shorturl.at/yLU78 #ChildProtection #HumanRights #NoChildAlone #ChildRights #JusticeForChildren

In their own words 💔 Kids in the ‘alternative care arrangement’ model of government care moved from ‘cage to cage’ in cheap, cockroach infested motels with little to no support or supervision. The money is invested in the crisis end of the system, not in supporting families to stay together or in carers to provide home-based care and support. Carers receive on average $15K per annum to support a child or young person in their home - families receive even less on supports to remain together. Yet it costs up to (and sometimes more than) $1million per child per annum in this broken model of care? Where is the logic in this? Can we even call it ‘care’? My heart breaks for our society; for our kids; for our future. And the most alarming thing of all - this is not new information. It has been like this for a very long time 💔 #ahomeforeverychild #weneedtodobetter #advocacy #support
‘Moving from cage to cage: An interim report of the Special Inquiry into children and young people in alternative care arrangements’ by the NSW Advocate for Children and Young People (ACYP) was released a few days ago. It is a vital look into what it is like for children to be housed in motels with shift workers instead of in a family home. Children need family and when they can't live with them, they need to be cared for in an alternative family-home. No child should have to keep their bags packed, be isolated, miss school for two years or spend their childhood in distress. Change is needed immediately. Costs are estimated at $965,000 per child in this emergency style accommodation compared to the $15,000 provided to a Foster / Kin carer to support the child in their home... the maths and outcomes speak for themselves. I spoke with Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Drive about the findings: https://lnkd.in/gvifDnwe #children #youngpeople #youth #childrensrights #permanency #home #foster #adopt #homelessness Adopt Change

🚨 Have you noticed how begging is becoming a growing trend in towns and cities? 🤔 It's disheartening to see people using small children, the elderly, and even those with disabilities to solicit cash on the streets. In some cases, these individuals aren't begging for themselves—others are overseeing their daily earnings. 😞 What’s even more concerning is that some of the money given out of goodwill is later used to purchase alcohol. 🍺💸 It raises the question: Has begging become a form of employment? And if so, are we unknowingly supporting exploitation? 🤷♂️ We need to be mindful of how we offer help. Sometimes our kindness may not be reaching the people who truly need it. 🙏 🛑 Say NO to exploitation. Let’s not entertain practices that harm more than they help. 🛑 #CommunityAlert #StopExploitation #EthicalGiving #SupportTheNeedy #KindnessWithPurpose #RaiseAwareness #ProtectTheVulnerable

And yet 1 in 3 children have a foreign born parent. We estimate that 30,000 children in care could and should have family overseas who should be explored for their long-term care. Read our new report here: https://lnkd.in/eAMRk8fm #internationalkinshipcare #familyfirst #ChildsRightToFamily

There are a bonus 2 posts from me this week, as there is so much to update you on! This is Part 1. In recent weeks, I: 💜 Was invited to be a panellist on a virtual panel event about disability, hosted by Veena Patel of Rabobank for their Global Markets team, alongside Ade Murana and Jamie Fortune. We had a great discussion about disability and work. I was blown away by how many people attended this event - it was great to see so much interest and appetite to learn. I am so pleased to be part of a discussion that can help to shape culture and attitudes towards disability within finance and capital markets. 💜 Had a great conversation with Arooj Sheikh. Arooj reached out to me after seeing my recent post about the recent Women and Diversity in Law Summit and Awards. She wanted to find out more about the work of the Disabled Solicitors Network, as she is likewise trying to raise awareness of disability inclusion within the Kenyan legal sector. We had such a great discussion about our personal experiences of disability, managing work and health, and strategies to drive inclusion. Arooj was recently listed in the Forbes 30 under 30 Africa 2024 list for her work on Beyond Kenyan Bars Foundation, a really impressive initiative of which Arooj is the founder and CEO. Beyond Kenyan Bars is committed to building brighter futures for young children incarcerated in Kenyan prisons with their mothers, by ensuring access to essential needs like nutritious meals, clothing, and education. Arooj is a rising star and I have no doubt that she is going to drive positive and inclusive change in the Kenyan legal sector, the justice system and beyond. See https://lnkd.in/e4uHFGAD to learn more. 💜 Connected with Claire Farrington. Claire partners with Lucy Martin (the BBC weather presenter) in their business, The Power of Different. Together, they promote positive attitudes to being different, share what their unique situations have taught them and explain why diversity, equality and inclusion is not just a business imperative but a moral one. Claire and I met for coffee, and it was enlightening to hear about her experience of receiving a Down's Syndrome diagnosis as a first-time mother and the post-traumatic growth that followed. For those that are already planning ahead to International Day of Persons with Disability 2024, do consider a talk by The Power of Different! 💜 Caught up with Ollie Thorn at Moving Ahead, to hear about some exciting things that he has in the pipeline that will be transformational for disabled talent. Part 2 to follow later this week! But before I end, I also want to give a shout out to some of my amazing colleagues at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, who have recently been promoted: 🌟 Claire Harrop - promoted to partner 🌟 Rosemary Lobley, Annie Whiteside, Anthea Bowater, Lauren Jackson - all promoted to counsel. Well done, ladies - you are extraordinary role models, and it is such a privilege to work with you!

Across Ghana, there are some 139 orphanages housing 3,530 children. UNICEF data has shown that over 80% of intitutionalized children have a living parent or relative that they could be reunified with, but the process of finding these family members is challenging – and even once found, many steps are required to reunify the child with their family in a safe and sustainable way. It takes time. BUT the time and efforts invested are so worth it – because that is exactly what every child longs for - to be with their family. #BoxingDay #Merrychristmas #Joy #seasonalGreetings #FamilyReunification #SelfCare #CommunityEmpowerment #FamilyCare #BethanyGhanaMission #FamilyIsEverything #ParentingWorkshops

As we kick off 2024, we’re sharing more about our strategy to change the way the world cares for orphans. First up, we’re looking at how and why we pioneer family care in locations where it doesn’t exist. When we pioneer family care, we work with governments to change the primary care model of orphaned and vulnerable children. We develop and implement innovative, sustainable solutions to help ensure every child has the opportunity to grow up in a loving family. Check out this video to learn more about how we pioneer family care from The Hope Effect’s founder, Joshua Becker! #thehopeeffect #orphancare #familycare #thehopeeffectmexico
