It is an honor to be delivering the keynote address at the writers' summit in London next month! The writers' summit is Monday, 11 March the day before the The London Book Fair !! I will also be part of a panel on social media at noon at the London Book Fair on the 12th. In my keynote, I'll be talking about storytelling outside the pages of books. We all know that writers live with stories in their heads that become stories on paper, or on audio or on E-books that then live in the heads of others. But I'm coming to London to ask "What is yours?".... What is the story you are writing and need to write about yourself? Yourself as an author. Yourself as a human. Yourself as a person living in 2024 in a digital age- in an age in which all media is at and in the palm of your hand. And everyone else's too. How can you, as a human living today, reach that hand across all corners of the globe not only to share the stories you have written, but to share the story of you. As someone who has been acquiring and overseeing the publication of hundreds of books at #harpercollins for the past 17 years next month, the one thing that has grown more and more important, as we have become more reliant on smart phones, and other technologies is platform. Prior to my career in book publishing at HarperCollins Publishers, I worked in television news as a writer and ultimately as a senior producer of Good Morning America, and as an executive producer of documentaries and other programs across various cable and network platforms. Back then there were far more opportunities in what would be considered "traditional media" to have authors come on and talk about their books. Sometimes novels were able to break out and get quick spots on morning shows. That was when the GMA and Today Show book clubs were first starting up and when a book was picked, whether it was by #Oprah or Good Morning America or the Today Show it pretty much guaranteed success. That's still happening today, but broadcast viewership is down with so many more options available for eyeballs and AirPods. Of the thousands of books published every year- precious few are able to get a broadcasting or cable spotlight. In London, I will talk about how you can create your own spotlight by creating your own story (yes, Instagram story and LinkedIn post I'm talking about you too)! And unlike any other time in history, you've got your own network in your own hand and you need to learn how to use it to your own advantage, not only to reach readers directly, but also by raising your profile in such a way that even if you have never been invited to appear on any media programming in the past, you will have the opportunity to hone your skills as a video storyteller and increase your chances at being discovered. Discoverability is absolutely the name of the game when it comes to publishing a book if you want to have any chance of success. Let's discuss!! See you in #london #lbf24
