I was recently asked one of the most insightful questions I've been asked in a long time. It went like this. "Mel, we'd like you to walk us through how you would design and develop a leadership program for senior managers focused on leading in a VUCA environment." For those not familiar with VUCA - it's an acronym based on the leadership theories of economists and university professors, Warren Bennis and Burt Nanus, to describe or to reflect on the volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity of conditions and situations. Adopted by the US army to describe the complex, multilateral world perceived as resulting from the end of the Cold War, it provided a framework to reflect on the new realities of warfare and strategic defense. VUCA was adopted into the business lexicon as leaders recognised the term was just as applicable to the corporate world due to constant changes in markets, technology, environment, legislation and a host of other factors.
